The New Zealand White Rabbit
versus
The Netherland Dwarf Rabbit
Although both breeds build nests for their young the New Zealand
White rabbits build the standard nest. Adding a box with straw to the rabbits cage
will make a good nesting place for the doe. When the rabbit gets close to her due
date, usually 30 days after conception, she will start pulling out her fur. she
will add this to the nesting box. After delivering her young she eill pull fur
to cover her babies to keep them warm and safe.
The Netherland Dwarf rabbit goes through the same routine except
she can build a more interesting nest. The dwarf rabbit can build a tunnel out of
her fur which resembles that of a wild rabbit's nest. The wild rabbit builds
a tunnel in the ground and lines it with fur. The design of the rabbits cage
will effect the design of the nest.
Your success or failure when breeding rabbits will depend on first
your passion for the rabbit you choose. Second, detailed records of your rabbits,
including pedigrees on all the rabbits is essential. Finally, carefully designing
a breeding program that works for you will be important. There are many factors
to look at when deciding which rabbit to breed. If you are interested in helping
the food or research industry, then you might choose the New Zealand White
rabbit. On the other hand, if you want to help the pet industry and like to get
creative, do a lot of research, and have a lot of patients , then the Netherland
Dwarf rabbit would be a good choice.
