The New Zealand White Rabbit
versus
The Netherland Dwarf Rabbit
Equally important are the differences in the cost of the New
Zealand Whites and the Netherland Dwarf rabbits and what they are bred for.
One reason is the cost of the two breeds. The New Zealand White rabbits can be
bought and sold fairly cheaply. They can be bought for as little as $8-20 per
rabbit from a breeder. In addition, these rabbits are also sold by the pound
to slaughter houses and research centers.
However, Netherland Dwarf rabbits are more expensive and usually
sell for $30-100 per rabbit. It is best to buy these rabbits from a breeder.
Last the New Zealand White rabbits and Netherland Dwarfs are bred for a
number of different reasons; the New Zealand White is bred for food, research,
and their fur. However, they can be bred for show or pets. In contrast, the
Netherland Dwarf rabbits are bred for pets and show. The cost of the two rabbits
and what they are bred for are so different.
Breeding the New Zealand White rabbit is easier than the Netherand
Dwarf for a number of reasons; First the breeding process only last a few minutes.
Once you introduce the doe(female) with the buck(male) the doe will run around
the bucks' cage usually a couple of times before allowing the buck to mate her.
There are few cases where the doe refuses to let the buck have his way with her.
In contrast, the Netherland Dwarf doe could be with the buck all day.
It is not unusual for the buck to take all day to get the doe tired enough to allow him
to mount her. Sometimes they never breed successfully. If they don't breed on that day,
the breeder should never leave them together all night, because it causes too much
stress on both rabbit. The buck can physically or emotionally injure the doe.
In some cases the stress can actually cause the death of one of the rabbits. The
New Zealand White rabbit takes less time and energy to breed than the Netherland
Dwarf rabbit.
