This is the last stage of the first part of our journey.

Our friends in Prince George have told us that we should not
miss the towns of Stewart on the Canada/USA border and Hyder just
on the other side.
These towns are really one, divided by the border. They are famous
for the grizzley bears and a wonderful glacier.

We stopped for a picnic on the way. There are beautful "rest
stops" on all the main roads. This one was beside a fast
flowing creek

 |
 |
I met an American tourist who had travelled a lot and he said
the valley up to Stewart is one of the most beautiful places he
has ever seen.
|
|
Every time we go round a corner it gets even better. We are driving
alongr with our mouths open. It is hot today but there are still
snow banks down to the edge of the very wide creek
|
 |
 |
These are small glaciers running down from the ice fields at
the top of the mountain. There are also fast streams and waterfalls.
|
|
Stewart is a truly nice town, situated at the top end of a long
inlet from the Pacific Ocean. It is an old mining centre, from
the later part of the 19th century. There are two parts to the
community, one part is the town of Stewart in British Columbia,
Canada and the other is the town of Hyder in Alaska, USA. More

We are very fortunate to be staying at a B&B operated by
a friend of a friend, Kathi's Place. Kathi has lived and worked
in and around Stewart for many years and we were fascinated by
her accounts of the prospectors camps, where you could only get
in by helicopter.
Kathi has a German background and makes the most wonderful breakfasts!
