The
Ulster Defence Association was formed in September
1971. Since 1973 the UDA have used the cover name
Ulster Freedom Fighters (UFF) to claim responsibility
for the killing of Catholics as well as other attacks.
The UDA was declared illegal in August 1992.
The
UDA was and remains the largest Loyalist paramilitary
group having 50,000 members at its peak. During the
1990s the UFF stepped up its attacks on Catholics and
Republicans. In October 1994 like other paramilitary
groups the UDA called a ceasefire.
Like
other Loyalist paramilitary groups the UDA have lost
many in the off its men in defence of Ulster while
fighting violent Republicanism.
