my first ex boyfriend from fourth grade, Justin, was always mean to me. he was widely known for being a smart boy, a whiz in school. he had these big eyes that made everyone like him. one day, he started calling me a goldfish in front of his friends. word quickly spread that i was bad at math, with a short fused memory, and an attention span lasting no more than 4 minutes at a time. i got really mad, of course! this was my close pal, my first, successful crush story. but he couldn’t undo, or stop the rumors from spreading now! that was too bad. me and the few friends i had left were so angry; who was he to make my life miserable? who wanted to eat lunch with the goldfish girl? we kicked him at recess, pulled at his hair, and called him Big-Head. he yelled at us, “stop! what are you doing? stupid girls!” pushing him backwards, forwards, scratching, pulling at his shirt, until he ripped himself apart and ran away from us. when it was time to go back in, he was nowhere to be found. everyone scrambled back inside, but i began to search the corners of the playground for hints of Justin. finally, i heard a quiet, low sob. following the desperate sound, i made my way to the back courtyard of my school, which was partitioned by a square wall. the school’s Guardian logo -- a figure vaguely resembling Jesus Christ, holding a sword -- floated in the center of the wall, and sitting slumped right under the looming figure was none other than Big-Head himself (head between knees). “are you ok? are you crying?” “what does it look like? you called me Big-Head.” “everyone calls me goldfish now, thanks to you...” “i’m fine, just let me be, and don’t bring anyone else to this wall!” |
