| This split was originally going to have different bands on it, for instance the utterly perverted French Cyber Porngrind act The Bitch Project, but various things happened and the bands you see above and over the course of the next page ended up on it. ANAL PENETRATION I've always enjoyed the works of this band. Up until getting this album I've only had mp3s of their songs, so having something on CD is great after all this time. A one man band comprising of a geezer known as Nydoom, Anal Penetration, from Holland, formed in 2000 as a side band of Blown To Bits. A split release with this band came out in the next year, followed by a full length effort Conquering The Rectum, and then a three way split album with Kill2Chill and Nydoom's Techno Noisegrind side project Mad Wankers. The set of songs we hear on this album followed not long after. I daresay the side on this split is some of the best works so far. It opens with an amusing sound clip taken from Kevin Smith's classick film Clerks, which serves as the intro to first song All Holes Filled With Hard Cock. Full of insane drum machine blasts, urgent riffage and alternately low, guttural and mid pitched, gurgly vokills, this here first track throws us in at t'deep end. The song is extremely simple with two main speeds, going from fast, solid beating to fast as fuck blasting. The rest of Nydoom's side crushes in a similar manner, with relentless yet creative drum machine blasts, sick vokills and a lot of fairly catchy Deathgrind tinged riffs with occassional squalling harmonics. I was reminded of a few other bands by some of the songs, what with song structures slightly akin to Lymphatic Phlegm and Mortician, as well as the odd Gorerotted, early Dead Infection and Malignant Tumour style riff. The production is by no means crystal clear. It's distorted as fuck and quite lo fi, with grainy guitars and thick, pouding drums. I reckon a better production would have made this set of songs a fuckin brutal, pulverising force to be reckoned with, though a clearer sound would have taken vital elements away from the one man DIY Grindcore sound. Overall, this first part of the split is cool as fuck. Anal Penetration isn't by any stretch of the imagination copying any of the bands I mentioned before, cause Nydoom has enough of his own stlye to create a sound that is all his own. He's taken a sturdy Deathgrind/Goregrind base and splattered it with enough sticky sexual fluids secreted by the depraved pornographic theme, making this a great set of nine dark, original and well written short songs. A heavy, continuously blasting, serrated Porngrind ride. Those into Grindcore who enjoy both brutal Deathgrind and depraved Porngrind will bloody love this. A thrusting 5/5 |

| COUNT CHOPULA Now then, Count Chopula is another one man band, playing some highly original Cybergrind. It's a side project of Will Drew from good old Amoebic Dysentery, sharing its name with a homemade pedal powered chopper bicycle, the band submitting its debut release to this split. The first song, Fucked Cadavers does well to summarise the Count Chopula sound. It opens with a series of programmed blasts and fizzing distorted sounds, followed by Will belcking out growls similar to his gutturals heard in Amoebic Dysentery, alongside some more robotic sounding grunts, with both vokill variations sporting their fair share of effects. There are bleeping, electronic sounds aplenty, coming on like something I've only heard before on my old ZX Spectrum as a kid. Extra life/bonus collection sounds bubble forth, accompanying more programmed blasts, cymbal crashes and handclaps. The rest of the songs are like this one, all highly catchy, very original, colourful and entertaining. Lots of electronic video game melodies, gret amounts of fuzzy and distorted programmed blasts, some twangling basslines here and there, a bit of jaunty piano, some downtuned guitar and great vokills. Will's voice goes from regular low grunts and inhuman, robotic sounding growls to throaty gurgles and normal vocals without effects. The production is very good, the songs sounding warm, clear and rounded, the listener easily able to hear all the different layers and levels. After hearing the raw and sleazy Amoebic Dysentery sound, I was surprised at the excellent production on the songs of this side project. Overall then, Count Chopula is an entertaining and fun listen. If SMES, Goat Orgy, Sleepy Samurai, Hydroxypropyl Methycellulose shared a phat bag of mushies, some acid and a few purple haze bifs, then went to play on a ZX Spectrum with early morning kid's television on the telly upstairs, inviting Libido Airbag in for a toot every now and then, this is probly what it'd sound like. Catchy as fuck, multilayered songs what make you sit up and take notice, creative and entertaining at the same time. Fans of the above bands with a varied taste in Grind and the right sense of humour, not to mention Amoebic Dysentery fans who wouldn't mind seeing another side of Will should happily devour this. 5/5 and a defeated end of level boss Click here for the next bit of the review |
