18. FORT BARNARD (South Pollard Street and Walter Reed Drive at the Fort Barnard Recreation Center) Here stood Fort Barnard, a redoubt constructed late in 1861 to command the approaches to Alexandria by way of Four Mile Run and Glebe Road. It was named for General J. G. Barnard, Chief Engineer of the Defenses of Washington. It had a perimeter of 250 yards and emplacements for 20 guns.
19. FORT REYNOLDS (Fort Reynolds Park, 31st Street, South, east of South Woodrow Street) Here stood Fort Reynolds, a redoubt constructed in September 1861, to command the approach to Alexandria by way of the valley of Four Mile Run. It had a perimeter of 360 yards and emplacements for 12 guns.
