| Wednesday, October 24, 2001 The girls sat at the side of a New York back road and Sunshine cursed to no one in particular. They took the back road since they were told that was the quickest way to get to the arena from where they were at. The girls sat there at the side of the road for the next ten minutes before Sunshine looked in the mirror and glared at Josephine. Josephine Keera Horowitz, Sunshine said in a calm voice. Did you check the oil like I asked you to when we stopped for gas? I forgot, Josephine replied beginning to cower. Give me one good reason why I shouldnt kill you right now, Sunshine stated. Because Im your best friend, Josephine said. Whatever, Sunshine said. Sunn, Destiny said. I checked the oil. Then why the hell did the light come on? Sunshine asked. And why did it stop moving? I have no clue, Destiny said. And why are we smoking? Venus asked and they looked out the front window. The radiator, Danielle said. Now what? Sunshine asked. Everyone just shrugged. I guess we start walking. What for? Josephine asked. I aint staying here, Sunshine replied. We aint that far from the main road, Danielle began, so why dont me and you go and use the phone we saw. Fine, Sunshine said. Will you three be all right here by yourself? Yeah, Destiny replied. Well be back, Danielle said, as her and Sunshine got out of the Durango. Sunshine looked under the Durango and saw the puddle of oil. Were leaking, Sunshine pointed out. No wonder the light came on. What else could possibly go wrong? I bet that guy back at the gas station did it, when he was helping me, Destiny said. He seemed kind of strange. Remind me to never go back there, Sunshine said. Well be back. Sunshine and Danielle walked away. Who do you think theyll call? Venus asked. Probably Kevin, Destiny replied. He did tell Sunn if she ever needs anything to call. At least well get to see them, Josephine said then to herself said, And I can see Howie. So while we wait what shall we do? Venus asked. You can tell us the story between you and Howie, Destiny replied, as Josephine looked at her very interested. We all know theres something going on. Right, Josie? Right, Josephine agreed. If you say so. Theres nothing going on, Venus replied. Then why do you call him every time we stop? Destiny questioned. I do not call him every time we stop, Venus answered. And he asked me to call anyway. It seems he wants to be more than friends, Destiny said. Hes not my type, Venus said. And I think youre talking about you and Brian. Dont you agree with me Jo? Whatever you say, Josephine said. Are you thinking of Alex? Destiny asked, as Josephine just looked at her. That is so cute. So is Brian. Give me a break, Josephine said. There was a time when you didnt like Brian. What changed your mind? His sweetness, Destiny replied. And hes really cute in person. Nice reason, Venus said looking out the window. Its starting to rain. Glad I aint out there. Same here, Destiny said. I hope theyll be all right out there, Josephine said. Who? Destiny asked. The Backstreet Boys? Sunn and Dani, Josephine said. Quit thinking of Brian all the time. Itll pass the time, Destiny said. Like youre not thinking of Alex. Josephine just looked at her then back out the window. Dont even lie and say youre not, because I know you too well. Josephine just continued looking out the window trying not to listen to anything Destiny was saying and thought about Howard although she was with Alexander. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I am soaked to the bone, Sunshine complained, as she and Danielle walked along. So am I, Danielle said. And its so cold. Youre telling me, Sunshine said. Next time lets fix the Durango ourselves and not have some stranger do it. Deal, Danielle said. So are you going to call Kevin? Or Nick? Sunshine just looked at her. Kevin said if I needed anything to call. So I guess this counts. Most likely. Im sure he wont leave us in the rain. They walked a few more feet. Theres the phone. Hopefully it works. Theres only one way to find out. They walked to the phone booth and they both went in to get out of the cold rain. I should have gotten that cell phone instead of those clothes. Sunshine picked up the phone and dialed a number. It rang a few times before someone picked up Hello. Sunshine stayed silent a moment and again they said, Hello? UmNick, its Sunnie. There was silence on Nickolas end. Are you still there? Yeah; whats up? Is Kevin around? We kind of need some help. Youre calling my cell and asking for Kevin? She didnt say anything. Why didnt you call Kevins cell? Your number was easier to remember. Right. There was silence a moment then Nickolas said, Hes busy at the moment. Is there anything I can help you with? I guess. Were kind of in a predicament. And that would be? My Durango broke down, its raining and cold, and we need a lift. Can you help? Sunshine listened to the noise in the background and Nickolas talk to someone before he answered, Sure. Where are you at? Outside of Buffalo. Were on this back road calledhold on. Dani, whats it called? Um Danielle looked and said, Sycamore Road. Sycamore Road, Sunshine said into the phone. Someone said it was a shortcut to the arena so we took it and the Durango went kaphooeey. Alright, Nickolas said. Well be there. I didnt mean you guys had to come. You have the concert to get ready for and Im sure theres a lot of work to be done. Anybody will do. I dont want to keep you from your work. Im sure youre really busy and have a lot to do and need to Sunnie, just shut up please. Were taking lunch so well be there. You have nothing to worry about. Ill tell the others whats going on and well be there. You already said that. I know. There was silence and Sunshine said, Im going to hang up so you get here. Alright. Can you hurry? Im not a big fan of New York. It scares me. Sure. Later. Later. Bye. Bye. Sunshine waited for Nickolas to hang up and when he did she hung up the phone herself. Theyre on their way. Good, Danielle said. Hopefully by the time we get back to the others theyll be there. Hopefully, Sunshine agreed, as they got out of the phone booth and headed back. As they started walking back they heard thunder in the distance and Danielle said, I think we better hurry before we get struck by lightening. Very funny, Sunshine said. I can already feel myself getting sick. Me too, Danielle said and they continued walking.
