The Alliance organised a Public Meeting to protest a proposed major housing development on the then BHP owned coastal land between Redhead and Belmont. The event took place on 24 February 1999 at Belmont High School. The evening featured special guest speaker Peter Garrett and door prizes to encourage attendance. The community response was overwhelming. The large hall was packed to standing room only and the event became a turning point in our campaign as politicians at all levels took notice of the strength of public opinion on this issue. The land was eventually saved from development and has now become a new state park. The Alliance has two members on the board of management of the new park and continues to play and active role in monitoring and influencing the future of the area. |
