For as long as the sun continues to rise and set over Lake Macquarie, we want everyone to be able freely enjoy the natural delights of our headlands, beaches, heathlands, dunes and wetlands, with their rich variety of marine, aquatic and terrestrial flora and fauna.
We aim to:
We are committed to ensuring the ecological integrity of our coastal region's terrestrial, wetland and marine environments between Munmorah and Glenrock State Conservation Areas. We work to increase community awareness of the value of conserving, safeguarding and rehabilitating our precious landscapes and seascapes for tomorrow's world. We attempt to influence any major rezonings and new developments so that they are consistent with the principles of ecologically sustainable use.
For example, recently we played a part in the prosecution of a Redhead landholder/developer who had cleared sensitive land, destroying threatened flora, without council consent. The developer had intended to locate a noisy commercial enterprise in this seaside village and residents rallied against this inappropriate proposal.
Following the major achievement of securing the ex-BHP land between Belmont and Redhead, we are now assisting the Community Trust that manages (with the Department of Lands) this new 525 hectare reserve. The Alliance played a significant role in lobbying the State Government for this outcome, but would not have been successful without the support of the community. We obtained this vital support by maintaining positive relationships with the community, local, state and federal governments, related agencies, and groups such as Coastcare and Dunecare.
Our members are also working with local and state governments on the establishment of the Lake Macquarie Coastal Wetlands Park between Redhead and Swansea. We also add our support to other conservation groups in the local community, such as the Catherine Hill Bay Progress Association.
Our plans for the future include scrutinising the proposed marine sanctuary zones in the Hawkesbury bioregion so that we can support the ecologically sustainable aspects of it. There is much more ongoing work to be done by our volunteers who love our precious coastline!
