To Never Be Told

A secret can be such a special gift
That's given to us for a heart to lift.
A special secret can be so dear
One that's whispered in an ear.

It's given to us because of trust
So to hold it tight is a must.
If you tell it could break a heart
Or cause a friendship to part.

It helps to talk to someone else
So things aren't bottled inside ourselves.
Sometimes we want a surprise to give
So in your heart let this secret live.

Some things we need to get off our chests
It's given to us to be put to rest.
So hold my secrets with a lock and key
Then respect you'll get from me.

Remember the secrets you're asked to hold
To someone else should never be told.

POSTSCRIPT:
There are exceptions to every rule
We've been told since we were in school.

When there's a danger or a life at stake
The right decision we must make.
