2. Per Jennifer Bishop: A Glebe is land or other property held by or tithes due to a beneficed clergyman. The term Glebe Terriers is specific to the Church of England. Glebe Terriers are documents which list the Glebe property held by the individual parish. These documents often mention the tenants of the Glebe lands and/or the holders of the adjoining lands. It is the naming of these other individuals which makes Glebe Terriers of genealogical value for researchers with English ancestry.

General Notes: Charles' forebears back to George Newhook, blacksmith of Tollard Royal, Wiltshire, who was born about 1670. Tollard Royal lies in the heart of the Cranborne Chase which was a royal hunting forest and was often the scene of bloody confrontations between poachers and gamekeepers.
In the church at Tollard Royal on the 8th of October, 1702, George Newhook married Martha White. Martha was from the nearby village of Ebbesbourne Wake and had been baptised on the 26th of December 1672. As the village blacksmith George would have been a respected member of the Tollard Royal community. Tragically, their first child, Martha, baptised on the 3rd of August, 1703 died at the age of 3 years. However, two more children followed, George Jr., named after his father, was baptised 23rd of January, 1708/9. Another little Martha followed on the 10th of June, 1711, Many of this Marthas' descendants were destined to leave England for a new life in Australia. George and Martha Newhook were both buried in the churchyard of Tollard Royal. George on the 28th of November, 1723 and Martha on the 13th of January, 1733/4. An incredible document exists which gives us a glimpse into their lives. As George died Intestate his executor was required to provide the court with a detailed list and value of his goods. His widow, Martha, provided the court with the following:

General Notes: George was employed as Gardener to Rt Hon Lord Melcombe in Eastbury Park, Tarrant Gunville, Dorset, England.
"Eastbury Park, Tarrant Gunville, nr Blandford, Dorset. Eastbury was built by Lord Melcombe, and in its very short heyday ranked third in size to Blenheim and Castle
Howard. Building started in 1718, but owing to many difficulties the house was not finished until 1753, yet only ten years later, Lord Temple, who took over the latter part of the construction, had half the house pulled down because he could not afford the cost of its upkeep. At one time he had even offered free residence and £200 a year to anyone who could keep it in good repair. By 1775, only the North Wing remained and this had been let off to labourers of a nearby estate, as tenements.
Lord Temple had a steward called William Doggett, and it was during the last part of the construction of Eastbury that Doggett began to defraud his master of large sums of money that was supposed to have been used for the building work, and also stole building materials for his own financial gain. Lord Temple discovered the misuse of funds and thefts, and demanded repayment of a very large sum of money. Doggett could not pay, and on the eve of his arrest, shot himself in the house. His blood is said to have left a stain on the floor which could not be removed. Rather surprising for a suicide, he was buried at Tarrant Gunville Church.
On certain nights a coach with a headless horseman is said to drive from Eastbury and return, carrying Doggett to the house, where he alights, enters the house and proceeds to the same panelled room where he killed himself. The sound of a pistol shot is heard and the phantom episode ends. The ghost of William Doggett is recognised by the yellow silk ribbon which is tied round his breeches. It is interesting to note that when Tarrant Gunville Church was rebuilt in 1845, Doggetts coffin was exhumed, and when opened his legs were found to be tied together with yellow silk ribbon. More ominous was the fact that his face was found to be rosy and there was no sign of decay to the body, which caused the superstitious villagers to assume that he was a vampire. "

BIOGRAPHY:
1. From "Newhook Master Shipbuilders" by Nimshi Cole-Crewe, Research Officer, Newfoundland Archives, St. John's. This monograph appeared in the "Evening Telegram", St. John's, Nfld., on 17th and 18th June 1965, and a list of corrections in the issue of 25th June. (This is part of the article - other excerpts are noted with the individual they refer to directly. All other excerpts marked simply per N.C. Crewe)
"The Newhook family are the greatest family of ship builders in the history of Newfoundland. In this monograph, are listed the eleven of them that I have established to have been "master shipbuilders," from either reliable traditions or written records, or both.
There was evidently a Committee of the House of Assembly in 1858 on local shipbuilding. In its issue of 25 January 1858, "The Patriot," a St. John's newspaper, reports the evidence given before the Committee by Hon. John Munn, merchant and shipowner of Harbour Grace, ending with this sentence: "...... No country can offer such an exhibition of genious and native talent, as our Kearneys, Stevensons, Newhooks, Curtises, Pittmans etc., have already produced in the science of shipbuilding.
When I was a small boy at Elliston, Trinity Bay, the grand old lady of the place was Mrs. Robert Tilly. Her husband, the first resident supplying merchant, had died as far back as 1872. I recall her speaking to me about three times; I had even then come to know that she used to say three things about herself. First, that she was born at New Harbour, Trinity Bay, to the name of Catherine Newhook; secondly, that her father and his father, were shipbuilders in Newfoundland; thirdly, that her paternal grandfather was a Frenchman. Mrs. Tilly died in 1912 at the age of 88, and I attended her funeral. The officiating English-born curate said, in a short address, that her soul was now in Paradise. This doctrinal statement was seriously questioned by my foster-father and his fellow Salvationist, Bobby Hobbs. They were of opinion that clergyman ought to have said Heaven, not Paradise, which the latter place was unknown to them as a country eternal.
In 1928 I married her grand-daughter. Ever since then, I have been gathering data on the Newhook stock, for compiling the family trees of my wife and children. It is my opinion that I now have, on file or in my head, more information about the Newhooks, from their origin in this Province down to the present time, than is known to any other living person, and more than has been known to any other person in the last seventy years.
In the course of research, I have contacted several elderly Newhooks, but all of generations younger than Mrs. Tillys.
Charles Newhook (the first), 1752-99
I call him Progenitor Charles Newhook (first), because he is the immigrant from whom all subsequent Newhooks in Newfoundland have sprung, and to distinguish him from those of them also named Charles. He was brought out from Europe to Newfoundland about 1777, by the mercantile firm of Benjamin Lester, to be its master shipbuilder at Trinity, Trinity Bay. Rev. George Lester-Garland, of England, has told me that Newhook is mentioned in the surviving Lester letterbooks of the eighteenth century. He was a young man when he came to settle at Trinity, and he must have brought his wife with him, as the Trinity church register has no entry of his marriage. His wife's maiden surname is unknown to-day. He was the grandfather of Mrs. Robert Tilly.
This Charles Newhook (first) was of French extraction, but whether he was a native-born Frenchman is now unknown. But I am inclined to think that he was a native Englishman of French near extraction. It would be very unusual for a firm to bring out to Newfoundland, either as a fishery youngster or as a tradesman, anyone except of English or Irish birth.
At Trinity, or elsewhere in that bay, there were born all his now traceable eight children, between 1778 and 1799, six sons and two daughters. Of the sons, three became master shipbuilders in Trinity Bay, Charles (second), William and James. Of them, the elder two, Charles and William, were old enough at their father's death to have received some shipbuilding training from him.
Whether Charles Newhook (first) resided and worked in Trinity continously, or wintered occasionally, for timber cutting and/or shipbuilding, at New Harbour or elsewhere in the bay, is not known to-day. The Trinity Anglican baptismal register, in which all his children's entries are found, records "Trinity Bay" as the birthplace of the elder two and Trinity for the others. But one must not assume from this "Trinity Bay" recording that these two children were not born at Trinity, seeing that the term "Trinity Bay" was often used by the registering officiants to include both Trinity and other places in the extensive parish. I myself assume that all eight children were born in Trinity, and that Charles Newhook (first) resided and worked only at that place.
Charles Newhook (first) died at Trinity relatively young. The epitaph on his headstone, in St. Paul's churchyard there, reads as follows: "In memory of Charles Newhook, who departed this life the 18th November 1799, aged 47 years. Also of his daughter, Sarah Newhook, who departed this life the 7th of November 1798, aged 2 years and 9 months."
About the year 1800, the Lester firm was succeeded in name by the Garland firm, on the same premises, at Trinity, a Garland having married a daughter of Benjamin Lester, the founder. The premises are owned to-day by the Ryan family.
No names, or other particulars, survive, either in traditions or in records, available to me, of the vessels that Charles Newhook (first) must have master-built or repaired at Trinity or elsewhere during his more than twenty years of work.
Jennifer Bishops Notes:
1. St. Paul's Anglican Church records say that "C. W. Newhook Sen(r) was buried on November 24, 1799."
2. From: Charles G. Strong's website we learn the following: The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador, Charles Newhook, at ttp://enl.cuff.com/entry/ 63/6324.htm , "Newhook came to Newfoundland from Europe around 1777 to work for the mercantile firm of Benjamin Lester. An 1808 note in the register at St. Paul's
Anglican Church in Trinity indicates that the name Newhook is from the French Huguenot name Nuik, and it is generally agreed that the first Charles Newhook was of French extraction." Several Newhook researchers no longer believe the validity of a Huguenot connection.

1. Per Michael S. Cooper and Charles G. Strong: Samuel was born in Trinity, Trinity Bay, NF and was baptised on October 23, 1799. Samuel is buried in St. Paul's Anglican Cemetary in Trinity, Trinity Bay, NF. His wife Sarah is probably buried there also.
2. Per Michael S. Cooper and Charles G. Strong: Samuel and Sarah had the following children: Sarah Newhook baptised on August 25, 1830 in New Harbour, Trinity Bay, NF. John Newhook baptised on July 07, 1836 in New Harbour, Trinity Bay, NF.
3. I am presuming that his son John is the John Newhook who had Charles, Robert and Elizabeth in Old Shop Trinity Bay, NF. The early records of Old Shop show a John and Mrs. Sarah Newhook as residents and the 1894 and 1904 directories lists a John Newhook of Samuel: these entries are the basis for this leap. To date no records have been found to show that John Newhook of New Harbour went to Old Shop. Family recollection is that Charles Newhook came to Old Shop from Chance Cove area with his father, who is believed to have been named John.
Samuel married Sarah Unknown Newhook.

General Notes: From "Pot Heads and Drumhoops, A Folk History of New Harbour, Trinity Bay" (1995), by Garry Cranford with Raymond Hillier: "Newhook was married at Trinity, in Garland's parlour in 1821, apparently at the tender age of fifteen years". Other sources have said he was married in 1831, at the age of about 24.
N. C. Crewe: "About 1830 Miss Sarah Lander, daughter of the deceased sea-captain, Thomas Wise Lander, came out from Poole, England, to visit her re-married mother, then Mrs. William Davis Cross, at Trinity. A fortune-teller had told the young lady that the first man she would meet in Trinity would marry her. Sure enough, Charles Newell Newhook was the first to help her off the vessel in Trinity, and in 1831 they were married there, where their first child was born next year."
On Sarah's tombstone in the United Church Cemetery in New Harbour is the inscription "Sarah Lander, wife of the late Chas Newhook, JP..." She died in 1901.
Charles married Sarah Lander Newhook, daughter of Thomas Wise Lander and Sarah Way Unknown Taverner, on 4 May 1831 in Trinity, Trinity Bay, NFLD. General Notes: BIOGRAPHY:
1. Per N.C. Crewe:
"Jonas N. Newhook, 1823-1901 - Born at New Harbour in 1823, second child of the second marriage of Charles Newhook (second). He married Rachel Knight of St. John's. Early in adult life, he settled in Jackson's Cove, Green Bay, where he was a master shipbuilder, and where he died in 1901 and is buried. His grandson, Mr. Chesley Ralph Newhook of that place only recalls the name of one of the vessels he built, the Fleetwing.
In his salty autobiography "When Ships were Ships," sea-captain William Morris Barnes, born in St. John's in 1850, tells on page 9 of the building of this vessel for his family firm of supplying merchants and shipowners, and of her first foreign voyage. He writes, "...... this beautiful bark, the Fleetwing ...... she was the fastest thing ever sailed salt water. She was built down in a place called Green Bay, built by a man called Newhook; he was a smart carpenter ......" Of her first voyage, Barnes writes, "She started out for Brazil and she made a very quick run down, thirty-two days to Pernambuco from St. John's ...... the captain said that he saw nothing on the whole trip that he didn't come up with and pass, and nothing ever came up and passed him."
In his article "Storms and Ships," page 270 of volume one of Smallwood's "Book of Newfoundland," captain John P. Horwood writes, "The barque Fleetwing, 249 tons, was built at Green Bay by Jonas Newhook and launched in 1856 ...... she is said to have made three different passages from Harbour Grace to Pernambuco in twenty-one days each passage. An average passage would be about thirty days."
Messrs J. B. Barnes & Co., Captain Barnes' family firm, advertised five vessels for sale by auction in "The Telegraph" of St. John's on 22 September 1858. The advertisement thus describes this vessel: "The well-known Barque Fleetwing, 248 tons, coppered high to the bends, of very supierior build, all juniper frame, topsides, rails and covering boards of Baltimore white oak, keelson of white oak and Demerara greenheart, with greenheart treenails. This vessel will bear the strictest examination, and is, without exception, the fastest vessel in the Trade."
She came to be owned by Punton and Munn, and a newsitem in "The Star" of Harbour Grace, 10 December 1872, reads as follows: "Messrs. Punton and Munn's barque the Fleetwing arrived here yesterday from New York. This fine vessel, now under command of Captain James Pike, made the passage in six days and four hours; the quickest run we believe on record made by any sailing vessel from thence to this port. Captain Pike has of late made some very fast voyages ...."
In the 1934 obituary quoted in section (5) above, Shortis states that the Newhooks also built the Tasso for the firm Stabb, Row and Holmwood, St. John's, the great rival of Kearney's barque Rothesay (meaning that Michael Kearney was the master-builder of that vessel).
In his book "Sea Stories from Newfoundland," Michael F. Harrington devotes most of a chapter to a neck-and-neck race between the Rothesay and the Tasso from Demerara, British Guiana, to Cape Spear, Newfoundland. Both barques left Damerara the same day. On the fourteenth day out, August 27th, the Tasso sighted Cape Race and soon afterwards saw another ship nearby, which proved to be the Rothesay and which won the race to Cape Spear by a very few minutes. The author states that the Tasso was then about three years old, being "the crowning achievement of the lifework of Jonas Newhook, of New Harbour." This is, of course, Jonas N. Newhook, and he evidently built the Tasso in his native place before moving north to Jackson's Cove.
Captain Barnes also writes that there was only one bark that "ever did anything with the Fleetwing," and that was the Tasso. He goes on to say that the captain of the Tasso said that the Fleetwing was the only thing that could ever beat the Tasso.
To sum up, the credit for producing these two masterpieces of shipbuilding art, the Fleetwing and the Tasso, belongs to Jonas N. Newhook of Jackson's Cove.
No names or particulars are known to me of other vessels that Jonas N. Newhook master-built or repaired."
2. From Garry Cranford's & Ray Hillier's book, "Potheads and Drumhoops: A Folk History of New Harbour" (Pages 66-67):
"Jonas Newhook (1823-1901) built a number of vessels, not many in number, but superior in quality. His barque TASSO was rivalled only by Michael Kearney's ROTHESAY. In a neck-to-neck race from Demerara, New Guinea, to Cape Spear, Newfoundland, after fourteen days out to sea, they arrived only minutes apart! He also built the 246-ton barque FLEETWING at Green Bay in 1856. In 1885 he built the less-ambitious schooner QUEEN, 48 tons, for Charles W. Ross of Harbour Grace."
NOTES:
1. The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador has the following entry for Jonas Newhook, at http://enl.cuff.com/entry/63/6328.htm:
"(1823-1901). Shipwright. Born New Harbour T.B., son of Martha (Penny) and Charles Newhook qv. Married Rachel Knight. From a long line of renowned shipbuilders, Newhook as a young man settled in Jackson's Cove, Green Bay, where he continued the family tradition. His barque Fleetwing, a 249-ton vessel, was described in the Telegraph of St. John's: ``...coppered high to the bends, of a very superior build, all juniper frame, topsides, rails and covering boards of Baltimore white oak, keelson of white oak and Demerara greenheart with greenheart treenails. This vessel will bear the strictest examination and is, without exception, the fastest vessel in the trade.'' In his sailing autobiography, When Ships Were Ships, Captain William Morris Barnes termed the barque ``the fastest thing ever sailed salt water''. It apparently made numerous trips from Harbour Grace to Pernambuco in record time. Newhook also built the Tasso, another vessel of legendary speed."

Edwin Aposhian reported, "He resided at St. John's on LeMarchant Road, the north side, just west of the white house where the nuns resided. The house that was bought by Ralph and Martha Strong was later torn down to provide space for St. Clare's Hospital. Charles died of blood poisoning sometime between 1913 and 1916. "MacAlpine's 1898 Business Directory for Green Bay : "NEWHOOK, Jesse, S W Arm, Fish." "
From the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador:
Rattling Brook - (pop. 1986, 146). A lumbering and farming community on the west shore of Southwest Arm, Green Bay, just north of King's Point qv. Initial settlement occurred at Corner Brook Cove, near the prominent waterfalls that gave the community its name. The first European visitors to Rattling Brook were likely fishermen from stations further out the Bay, such as Little Bay Islands and Nippers Harbour, who went to the area in fall and winter to hunt and trap.
The first record of permanent settlement was of one family of eight in the 1884 Census. According to local tradition these first settlers were the family of Jesse Newhook, who moved from Jackson's Cove. A copper mine had opened nearby in 1878 and some of the earliest visitors were likely attracted by the potential for employment in mining. Early settlers included families from nearby communities (such as the Bartletts and Rowsells from Nickey's Nose and Three Arms); as well as families from further out the bay -- Shoe Cove (Dicks and Foster), Snooks Arm (Toms) and Bobbys Cove (Dawe). Rattling Brook boasted of good soil and sold crops to nearby communities, particularly Nippers Harbour -- the area's main supply centre. The population had increased to 112 by 1911, most people fishing or farming, eight engaged in mining. A decade later only one person was farming full-time. By 1935, when the population stood at 122, Francis W. Bartlett was operating a general store and building boats at Rattling Brook. That business provided work for several men in the winters, while others were loggers with local sawmills or trappers. In the summers most men still fished, with many moving further out the Bay as far as Shoe Cove.
Following Confederation additional employment became available as the Baie Verte Peninsula's mining and timber resources began to be exploited on a much larger scale. After the road system was improved in the late 1950s many residents began to commute to King's Point and Springdale to work in the construction or service trades. The new roads also opened up more agricultural land and improved access to markets, so that several residents were farming full-time by 1980. Rattling Brook's early population was predominantly Methodist, with a small number of Church of England members. By 1921 the Methodists had constructed a church and school and the Salvation Army had also arrived. A United Church school was maintained into the 1960s, but by the 1970s children were attending school in King's Point.

NEWHOOK Charles; M; Head; Married; 1844; Oct; 66; Chance Cove
NEWHOOK Mary A.; F; Wife; Married; 1865; Jul; 56; Island Cove
NEWHOOK William R.; M; Son; Single; 1894; Oct; 27; Old Shop
NEWHOOK Charles; M; Son; Single; 1890; Jun; 21; Old Shop
2. The 1921 Census lists Charles' birth as Oct. 1844 and that he was 66 at the time of the Census. This doesn't calculate. His headstone in Old Shop's Anglican Cemetary says that he died May 18, 1948, age 91. If he was born in October as the Census indicates, then his year of birth would be 1856. I am more inclined to believe the headstone, as the transcription of the Census is riddled with errors.
3. In the "History of Old Shop" (aka "Old Shop: Past and Present" printed in August 1983) the Voters List of 1889, lists a Charles Newhook from Come by Cance (not resident).
4. The Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador confirms that the Old Shop Newhook's came from Chance Cove, although it implies that Newhooks were n Old Shop earlier than is stated in the History of Old Shop.

Research Notes: Notes from Jennifer Bishop:
According to Bonnie (Newhook) Well's transcription of New Harbour birth records at the Nfld. Archives John and Jane Newhook had a child Robert John, born Jan 13 1876 in Old Shop. This Robert John is the brother to our Charles according to Robert (Gerald) Newhook and therefore, John and Jane are our common ancestors. Tracing back through the records, we find that our Charles and Robert John had several other siblings, however Elizabeth (who married Mr. Hunt) does not appear in the records. Perhaps she was baptised by another name or was born before the family appears in the New Harbour parish records. These other siblings include Mary Jane, the earliest listed, who was born in Chance Cove. This further confirms that Chance Cove is where our ancestor John was prior to Old Shop.

General Notes: BIOGRAPHY:
Albert was a retired railway cook and former fisherman. As a young man, Albert worked with the railway, cooking for the teams of men that were charged with clearing the rail lines. Often spending weeks in the wilderness, as the men cleared snow from the railway tracks in areas like Gaff Topsails, NF - known for it's bitter Winter storms.
There was a small wharf and fishing shed across the road from Grandpa's house. I remember my brother, Tim, and I playing on the wharf as children. In the late '70s, on a particularly sunny day, Albert took us out in his dory and we tried to catch the Jellyfish, which were shimmering in the calm water. Later we walked along the beach of Old Shop, and here and there, we collected bits of corral, dried starfish, mussel shells, and dried sea urchins shells. That day, or one very like it, I saw, washed up on the beach, a dead Dogfish - it was the ugliest thing I had ever seen.
One Father's Day, when I was still a child, I gave Albert a small model ship - nothing fancy (it probably cost $2.00). It was quite delicate however, with sails made from shells and red thread 'rigging' holding everything together. After Albert and Florence died, my mother found that little ship where Grandpa had kept it for about 15 years. It now has it's own little spot on a display shelf in my home.
Albert and Florence grew much of their own vegetable and raised some livestock (horses, pigs, chickens, and goats). I remember having goat's milk (though not knowing so until after I swallowed - as a 'townie' I thought it was gross to drink goat's milk) and feeding scraps to the pigs when we would visit. Florence was a very good cook, she made the best cod tongues and could do wonderous things with flounder fillets. And her raison bread was excellent.
Albert always loved a good cup of tea, served up 'proper' in a cup and saucer. He would have a 'drop' as he listened to the Fisheries Broadcast . My parents preferred drinking their coffee from mugs, but they always kept tea bags, cups, saucers, and a tin of Carnation milk around the kitchen for when Albert and Florence would visit.
Albert died from complications of throat and lung cancer. His Funeral Service was held October 20, 1993 at the Holy Spirit Anglican Church in Old Shop, Trinity Bay Newfoundland. He is buried in the Old Shop Anglican Cemetary.
Albert's daughter Shirley has a copy of his baptismal certificate. It indicates that he was baptised by Mr. Squires on July 12, 1924. This is also his birthdate. A separate receiving service was held on September 28, 1924. In that era, a child would customarily be baptised several days after birth; unless the child was sick and not expected to live until a proper ceremony could be held. In which case, the Reverend would be summoned or a 'layperson' would perform the baptism in the home. It is likely that Albert was baptised at hom e, but for reasons now unknown.
In 1958, Albert got his driver's license. The first vehicle he owned was a 1948 International pickup truck.
Albert Charles and Florence Newhook were the third family to have a Television in Old Shop.
