General Notes: James Addison was from Levens, Westmorland County, UK. He married Jane Powley and they are believed to have lived in Beetham, close to Arnside, for a time, where their first son, Thomas Powley was born according to the 1881 Census. They then returned to Levens where the middle son, Peter was born. By the time the third son, George Gibson was born they had returned to Arnside. They were in Arnisde for the birth of their first daughter, Isabella, in 1883, but later moved to Silverdale, Lancashire, further south along the coast where a second daughter Mary was born in 1886. Finally they moved to Southport in the 1890s where daughter Agnes was born in 1897.
Marjorie Pearce has mentioned haviing a letter from her great Aunt which mentions Jim Addison as living in Southport. There is also another reference to the family as living at 20 Poulton Road, Southport. In the 1944 letter of Peter Addison (a nephew) Jim of Southport, Lancs was referrred to as having passed on at least 3 years earlier.
Penelope Messenger in her letter states that her Great Grandfather James lived at 20 Poulton Road, Southport and died there in September 1930. In her second letter she states that in the 1940s her family had moved to Nottingham, and therefore the house which her great grandfather James Addison had lived in Southport since the 1890s was occupied by another family. 7,8

General Notes: Thomas Powley was born in Arnside, a village about 3 miles south of Levens, in Westmorland County, UK. His father and mother were from Levens.
At some point before 1907 he and his family moved to Southport, Lancashire. There he met and married Florence Pillinger (Grannie Hine). Florence's people were from Wiltshire. Aunt Hilda thinks that Thomas may have been a gardener and Florence worked "in service", as a house servant. They emigrated to Toronto in 1907. A carpenter, he built the family house at 60 Ferrier St in Toronto. Sons Herbert James and Kenneth Peter were born in 1909 and 1910 and then Thomas died in 1915, two weeks before the birth of Hilda.
There is a family story (from Pat) that he was found one day lying in the street, incapacitated by some unknown malady. Medical records indicate Florence took him to the Reception Hospital which was a sanatorium or mental institution on at 651 Broadview off the Danforth, because of his symptoms. He died several weeks later.
Hilda remembers her mother Florence having him buried in the St. John's Norway Cemetery in East Toronto (Woodbine and Kingston Road). When Hilda was a child she and her mother visited the gravesite regularly to pay their respects. Tim visited his gravesite in 2001 when he was in the area to visit Hilda. His grave is unmarked.
Tim has some of his carpentry tools and a book on housebuilding which he likely used in the building of the house at 60 Ferrier Street.
Research Notes: Thomas is listed on the 1881 UK census 4 years old at the time of the census.
Medical Notes: Death note: (Medical):Thomas Powley died of endocarditis, which is an inflammation of the lining around the heart caused by viral or bacteral infection. According to his medical records obtained from the Ontario Archives he was admitted to the Reception Hospital suffering from dehydration and delirium. He was in hospital for several weeks but he did not recover. His death record states that he was suffering of toxic psychosis before he died.

General Notes: Florence was born in Bath to Herbert Pillinger and his wife Maryann. She had five sisters, Jane, Margaret, Agnes, Lillian and Ada. Florence and Thomas met and married in Southport. Hilda says that she was in service in other words she worked as a servant for a well to do family. She raised the three children by herself by taking in laundry. When Bumpa was young he used to deliver the laundry around the neighborhood. After a time Florence married Mr Robert Badger who had been a border at 60 Ferrier. They had a son Bobby. Badger died of throat cancer according to Hilda and she married again to a Mr George Hine in 1924. Hilda says that at some point after this marriage Hine tried to get the house at 60 Ferrier put in his name without Florence's knowledge. When she discovered this she gave him a strong talking to about his future. Hine left shortly after and returned to England and was never heard from again. The family continued to live at 60 Ferrier until 1936. At one point in the 1930s Nana and Bumpa moved back in with Florence to help her cover expenses. They only stayed a year before moving back to Long Branch.

General Notes: Penelope Messenger in her letter states that her Grandparents continued to live in (20 Poulton Road) until 1947 when the family all moved to Nottingham. Her grandmother Mary Elizabeth was an apprentice dressmaker (to a Miss Saul in Southport) at age 14. She was a dressmaker (either from home or in the homes of her customers) for many years. Penelope also states that her grandmother remembered spending holidays at Levens, presumably with her grandparents.
In later years Mary Elizabeth loved patchwork and said that she had been taught by her Grandmother who she visited at Levens. She implied that her grandmother worked as Levens Hall and that her grandfather was a gardener there.

General Notes: Herbert James was the eldest son of Thomas and Florence Addison. He grew up in the Danforth area of Toronto. As a youngster his family lived at 60 Ferrier St. When his father died he was only seven. The family was poor and he left school to work as soon as he was old enough. As a youngster he delivered laundry that his mother did at home. He worked on a Laker for a year or so and then got a job at the Eatons Department Store where he met May Paxton.
For a while Herb & May lived with Aunt Annie (really May's mother) until Herb Jr arrived. Herb and May then rented a flat on Humberview Ave., from a Mrs. Philips. Pat was born there-not in the house, but at the Grace Hospital. Shortly after the family moved to Long Branch to be closer to Goodyear Auto tire factory on the Lakeshore and Annie got her job as a housekeeper at Tarry Hall in Bath, Ont. They moved downtown to Ferrier Ave with Herb's mother Florence for a year but that didn't work out and they moved back to Long Branch, likely to Marina Ave. They then moved to Elder Avenue where they lived while the kids grew up in the 1940s and 50s. Herb worked at the Goodyear for over 40 years, retiring in about 1970. In the 1950s the family moved to Alderwood where they lived at 13 Westhead Road.
In the 1940s the family began going up to Orr Lake where they rented a cottage on the south shore of the lake. Later on in the 1950s they moved to the north side and built a cottage on a lot behind Charlie Wicks. In 1962 Herb and May bought a cottage a few doors down where they remained for many years. After Herb retired he and May started holidaying down in Florida over the winters. Eventually in the late 1960's they sold the house on Westhead and moved to Elmvale so they would be close to Orr Lake.

General Notes: Gloria was born at Aunt Edna Motton's house on Dartmouth Crescent in Mimico. Aunt Edna was a twin sister of Grandmother Ethel Hennings. At the time the Hunt family lived in Long Branch. Gloria recalls that she lived at 51 Elder Avenue from the age of five. She was the eldest of three children to Edna and Al. She attended Daisy Avenue school where she first me Herb. One fo her school friends was Patsy, Herb's younger sister. After Gloria and Herb were married in 1949, she and Patsy went to England to join Herb who was in training with the RN. Gloria was a homemaker and a seamstress. She took pride in making most of her own clothes. In the 1970's she opened a consignment clothing shop in Sidney called Pandora's Closet. In the early 1990's she sold Pandora's and started a new business, a Tuck Shop in the Dunsmuir Lodge in Saanich. After several successful years Gloria sold the shop.

General Notes: Hilda was born at 60 Ferrier two weeks after her father Thomas Powley died. She has lived in the Danforth area of Toronto all her life. After her father Thomas Powley died her mother Florence took in boarders to make ends meet. When Hilda was 16 she had a relationship and married one of the boarders, Vernon Fenn. Vernon was a motor mechanic who worked in garages and service stations around the east end of the city. Hilda remembers they moved a lot in the early years as Vernon kept one step ahead of his creditors and seldom paid the rent on the flats they lived in. Her first son Teddy was born in 1932. He was followed by Walter (Buster) in 1934. Unfortunately Teddy died in 1936 when he fell off a balcony at the back of the flat they lived in on Walker Avenue. Vernon Fenn's creditors eventually caught up to him and he went to jail for fraud. Daughter Shirley was born in 1938. Things didn't work out with Vernon Fenn and they divorced in 1945.
Hilda later entered a relationship with a man named Thomas Prendergast and had a son Gerald by him. Pendergast was not a very good husband and shortly after Gerry was born Hilda told him to leave and not come back. In 1963 Hilda met a nice man named Fred Festorazi. She and Fred moved to 124 Lamb Ave and got married in 1964. She still lives there today.
Fred died of cancer in about 1980. Fred had a son Fred who also died of cancer in Jun 2001 at the age of 59. Her daugher Shirley married and had three children Cheryl, Joe and Tom with her first husband and later a son Ross with her second husband Murray Todd. Gerry married Rita and Walter (Buster) married Sally.
Hilda has many recollections of the family's first years in Toronto and provided much of the information on Thomas Powley Addison which she learned from her mother Florence. She remembers a visit of some relatives on the Addison side from Manitoulin Island when she was young and possibly living at 60 Ferrier with her mother. In the late 1940s Hilda remembers a visit from her mother's sisters Margaret, Janie and Margaret's daughter Sue (Esposito) She was living at 141 Harrison St near Dovercourt and Dundas at the time. She also recalls she last saw Margaret at Aunt Janie's funeral in the 1960s. She remembers her Grandfather Herbert Pillinger at her brother Ken's wedding, likely in the 1930s, drinking all the wine on the table before the toasts were finished. She also remembers visiting her brother Ken and his wife Gladys when they were living on Adelaide St, probably in the late 1950s. It was a bit of a run down apartment and soon after older brother Herb and Ken decided to build Ken and Glad a house out in Lakeview

They both attended George V Boys Grammar School in Southport. Thomas was offered a scholarship to train as a Methodist Minister and spent most of his ministry in Scotland. He married a Scottish girl and lived in Inverness for many years. Her uncle George went up to live with him and his family. He had one daughter Fiona who is still living in Scotland. Apparrently he died quite suddenly in about 1998.

After the war he trained as a school teacher and came to work in Nottingham. He retired in 1978 as Deputy Headmaster of a Comprehensive school that, in her words, was a tough place. He was a quiet man with a very dry wit. He passed away in Oct 2000. Her father was very close to his grandfather (James Addison) and inherited his love of gardening - it was his great hobby. 12
