General Notes: Mary Addison Moon journeyed to Upper Canada with her brother Rev Robert Addison in 1791. She was housekeeper to him and his two daughters during their early years in Newark (NOTL). It appears she returned to the UK before the war of 1812 as she was home in August 1814 at the time of death of her father John Addison. She was named executor of his will.

William was born about 1757 in Crosthwaite and Lyth, Westmorland, UK, was christened on 14 Nov 1757 in Beathwaitegreen, Westmorland, UK, died in Feb 1842 in Heversham, Westmorland, UK about age 85, and was buried on 6 Feb 1842 in Heversham, Westmorland, UK.

" In the name of God, Amen. I William Addison of Levens in the Parish of Heversham and County of Westmorland, Yeoman, do make this my last will and testament in form and manner following, that is to say,

First I give and bequeath unto my nephew Peter Moon of Lythe and William Caton of Stainton, both in the parish and county aforesaid, Yeomen, their Executors, Administrators or Assigns, all my real and personal estate, upon Trust, and for the ends intents and purposes hereinafter mentioned expressed of and concerning the same that is to say upon trust that they the said Peter Moon and William Caton their executors, administrators or assigns to pay out of my real estate, in ther first place all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses. And as to the residue of my real and personal estate and effects...I will order and direct that my beloved wife Eleanor Addison do and shall enjoy the use and interest of the same during the rest of her natural life.

And at the end of twelve months after the decease of my said wife, then I further will, order and direct and hereby give and bequeath unto my son, Peter Addison all of my personal estate whatsoever, together with all that plot, parcel or parcels of land or peat moss lying and being ont he south side and adjoining the Turnpike road leading from Beathwaite Green to the Bridge Inn and bounded on the east by an allotment belonging to Mrs Braithwaite and onto the west by one belonging to Miles Bains, together with the dwelling house working shop and outhouses there upon lately built, chargable with the payment of 300 pounds which said sum to be equally divided amongst my children (Peter included) share and share alike.

And as for the residue of my real estate I will, order and direct that they the said Peter Moon and William Caton their executors Administrators or assigns do and shall sell the same in public sale and shall distribute and divide the purchase money (deducting the expenses) in the manner following, that is to say,

To my grandson Thomas Philipson Addison, the illegitimate son of my daughter Mary Philipson the sum or legacy of Twenty Pounds

And again I will, order and direct that the remainder of the trust money be equally distributed and divided amongst my nine children, namely William, John, Thomas Robert, Peter, Eleanor, Mary, Jane, and Elizabeth.

And if it shall so happen that any of my said children die before their legacies or sums of money become due as aforesaid, (leaving lawful issue) that such issue child or children of him, her or them, so dying shall be entitled to their respective deceased parents share, and in equal shares and portions of more than one.

And again I will, order and direct that the said Peter Moon and William Caton their executors Administrators or assigns shall retain out of the monies which shall come to their hands the sum of two pounds each for their trouble together with all costs, charges and expenses, which they or either of them may expend, pay or be put into in or about the executor of this my Will and that they should not be answerable or accountable for each others acts, deeds or wilful Defaults but each of them for his own respective acts, deeds or willful defaults only, nor for any loss which may happen oof my effects or the said Trust money, provided such loss happen without their respective willful defaults.........

This writing contained in two sheets of paper was signed, sealed, and published and declared by the Testator William Addison as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us

(there is another line and perhaps shignaures on this page but they were overlooked in the copying.)

His will written 28 Feb 1839, is signed in a very shaky hand. He would have been 82 at the time. According to David Taylor, in the 1841 Census he and wife Eleanor were listed as living with his youngest son, Peter, at Birk's Cottage.

From David Taylor, 1861 Levens Census (f89, p17, sched 83) lists William as 76, Ag Labourer, (born Lyth) Jane, wife 65 (born Brigsteer), Thomas son, 39, unmarried tailor (born Witherslack), Maria, daughter, 20, housekeeper (born Lancs Kirkby Ireleth), Elizabeth Lewthwaite, 8, granddaughter visitor, scholar (born Levens), William Eccles grandson 11 months visitor, (born Burton in Kendal).

William married Jane (Jinny) UNKNOWN Addison in 1817 in Witherslack, Westmorland, UK.1 Jane was born in 1796 in Brigsteer, Westmorland.13

General Notes: Mary is mentioned in her father William's will written 28 Feb 1839, as having an illegitimate child, Thomas Philipson Addison to whom her father William left the sum of twenty pounds. A Mary Philipson appears in the villiage registry in 1829. It is possible that after the birth of the eligitimate son Thomas, she later married the child's father.

12. Peter ADDISON was born on 2 Dec 1804 in Levens, Westmorland, UK, was christened on 30 Dec 1804 in Heversham Church, Westmorland, UK, and died on 22 Jan 1871 in Willsworthy, Kenton, Devon at age 66.

General Notes: Peter Addison was born in Beathwaite Green, which later in the mid-1800s, came to be named Levens. Levens was a local name which appears in the Doomsday Book. Peter met and married Jane Gibson who was the daughter of a large family from the Beathwaite Green Parish. Peter and Jane lived at Birks Cottage, the family home which he had inherited from his father. In 1835 he, his wife Jane and eldest 3 children emigrated to Canada. They settled east of York (Toronto) in Pickering but did not remain there long. Perhaps the loss of two children in Canada prompted the family to return to England after several years as their next son was christened in Beathwaite Green.

According to David Taylor, by the time of the 1841 Census the family was back at Birk's Cottage in Levens.

Peter is listed in the Family Bible as having died in Willsworthy, Kenton, Devon on 22 January (year unreadable, later confirmed as 1871). His widow, Jane aged 72, was living with her brother George Gibson and employed as his housekeeper. One of the younger sons, Nicholas was also living there with his mother.

Peter married Jane GIBSON Addison, daughter of George GIBSON and Annie FEARON Gibson, on 2 Mar 1829 in Heversham Church, Westmorland, UK. Jane was born on 17 May 1807 in Beathwaitegreen, Westmorland, UK,43 was christened on 17 Jun 1807 in Beathwaitegreen, Westmorland, UK,43 and died on 20 Oct 1886 at age 79.

General Notes: In the 1881 Census Jane is listed as 72, a housekeeper living with her brother George Gibson in Levens.
