1. George GIBSON was born in 1769 in Levens, Westmorland, UK.
General Notes: Peter Addison's father in law George Gibson was a wood turner and Methodist/Wesleyn Preacher who christened some of the grandchildren in the family. He would have died prior to the 1851 Census. Based on 1851 census records, it is believed he was married to Annie and had two daughters, Annie and Elizabeth and a son George. Peter's son James Addison was listed in the George Gibson household in the 1851 Census. This establishes the link to the Gibson family.
Research Notes: This is the text of a hand written, undated and unsigned statement by George Gibson which perhaps may be a draft of a declaration in support of a court case or something similar.
'George Gibson of Beathwaite Green Levens. I am 70 years of age and upwards and I have lived at Beathwaite Green all my life. I have been Overseer for the Township of Levens for twenty five years and upwards. I know all the pieces of waste within the Manor of Over Levens. The waste and the trees upon it adjoining Isaac Bateman's property is bounded on the Northerly side by Causeway End Road which is an ancient road and on the other sides by ancient Inclosures. I have always understood that the Levens people exercise acts of ownership over the waste and over the other pieces of waste within the Manor, and I remember that Mr. Spicer the former owner of Bateman's property wished to enclose the waste, but Colonel Howard's Agent interfered and stopped him from doing so. I know that several Inclosures of waste have been fron time to time allowed by the Manorial Steward of Levens subject to small annual rents received as acknowledgements. I have had some of the Court Rolls of the Manor of Levens from 1760 and upwards read over to me and I can identify several of the enclosures allowed by the Juries with the consent of the steward at some of the Courts. Thus at a Court held in 1760 there is a Moss set out to Robert Kirkby adjoining Jackson Field which now belongs to Gandy's Trustees, and at the same Court there is a piece of waste at Mabbin Hall set out to one Johnson. This property is now owned by Mr. Barker and the waste I believe forms part of the garden there and was enclosed from the strip of waste ground adjoining.
I can also identify several of the Inclosures mentioned in the Court Roll of 1816. Thus the land enclosed by Stephen Washington was sold to Robert Rawes and is now owned by Benson Mackereth of Beathwaite Green. The piece of waste set out to George Penny was sold by his successor John Penny to Mr. Bennett of Helsington. It is near Box Cottage Beathwaite Green. The waste enclosed by Johm Langhorn is now part of the property near Owlet Hall belonging to my sister in law Ann Gibson for which she pays a rent of 2d. Remember that when Mr. Toosey was Agent at Levens the Levens workmen lopped 4 trees growing on a piece of waste near Causeway End. The Levens people always assumed the sole control over these wastes and they were always considered to be solely interested therein. The trees on the waste were called "Levens trees” shewing the ownership of the Levens people.'
George married Annie FEARON Gibson, daughter of Unknown and Elizabeth UNKNOWN Fearon. Annie was born in 1770 in Torver, Westmorland, UK.
General Notes: Annie is listed in the 1851 census as 81 years old and living with her son, George Gibson, 36, and two daughters, Annie 40, and Elizabeth 46.

Jane married Peter ADDISON, son of William ADDISON and Eleanor MOON Addison, on 2 Mar 1829 in Heversham Church, Westmorland, UK. Peter was born on 2 Dec 1804 in Levens, Westmorland, UK, was christened on 30 Dec 1804 in Heversham Church, Westmorland, UK, and died on 22 Jan 1871 in Willsworthy, Kenton, Devon at age 66.
General Notes: Peter Addison was born in Beathwaite Green, which later in the mid-1800s, came to be named Levens. Levens was a local name which appears in the Doomsday Book. Peter met and married Jane Gibson who was the daughter of a large family from the Beathwaite Green Parish. Peter and Jane lived at Birks Cottage, the family home which he had inherited from his father. In 1835 he, his wife Jane and eldest 3 children emigrated to Canada. They settled east of York (Toronto) in Pickering but did not remain there long. Perhaps the loss of two children in Canada prompted the family to return to England after several years as their next son was christened in Beathwaite Green.
According to David Taylor, by the time of the 1841 Census the family was back at Birk's Cottage in Levens.
Peter is listed in the Family Bible as having died in Willsworthy, Kenton, Devon on 22 January (year unreadable, later confirmed as 1871). George taught school in the Isle of Man for approx. five and a half years and married Elizabeth Herd of Kenton, England in 1867. He also played the organ in the church in Levens when he was young.
In 1872 George Gibson brought his family to Canada. First they came to Norwich, Ontario with their two sons William (1868) and Joseph (1869). They lived in Norwich for a few years and this is where Edward Richard (1873), Charles (1876), Barnes (1877), George (1879) and Margaret were born. Elizabeth (George's wife) died in 1879. George Gibson and his two eldest boys moved up to Manitoulin Island in 1881 and settled in Robinson Township (Silver Water) and started farming. The other children lived with relatives and in foster homes. A note on the history of the schools of Manitoulin states that when it could not be agreed as to where the first school should be built George Gibson purchased the logs that had been cut for the first school and used them to build his first home.
It is said that when George Gibson's eldest son William died he walked the shores for over a year searching for his body but it was never found. George Gibson died on June 25, 1921 and is buried in the Silver Lake Cemetery, in Silver Water on Manitoulin Island.

From Lori Mastelko - George Gibson Addison (1832) and/or Peter (1805). My grandfather was told that George G.Addison was the only one in his family to come to Canada. We did not even know the names of his younger siblings so I was excited to read the emails between you and Marjorie noting some of his brothers names. Now I find out that he had sisters. Interesting. He is buried less than 1 mile from where I grew up. My parent's home is built on a piece of George G's property.
From Shelley Cull - Gibson Addison died on July 25, 1921. His obituary reads as follows: "he had in his posession a curious medal given to his father bearing the date of July 4, 1818 with Lord Brougham's head on one side and stamped on the reverse "to the patriotic incorruptible and unbought freeholders of the county of Westmorland". I think it odd that Lord Brougham with give a medal to 13 year old Peter, but perhaps it was Peter's father, William, who received the medal? I cannot send you a copy of this newspaper clipping. The newspapers for this period were lost before microfilming. An original clipping is however, contained in my greatgrandmother's scrapbook, which I do not have, but is available for me to read when I go to visit my great aunt.

17. Nicholas ADDISON was born on 9 Mar 1847 in Heversham, Westmorland, UK.
General Notes: Nicholas grew up in Beathwaite Green and appears to have remained there most of his life. His birth is recorded in the Family Bible. As one of the later children of Peter and Jane, like James he may have been raised by the Gibson family.
In the 1881 Census he was listed as unmarried, living with his uncle George Gibson and George's sister (his mother) Jane and employed as a hammer shaft maker (tool). On 8 Nov 1888 as Executor he handled the settling of the estate of George Gibson, his maternal grandfather according to the accounts of Thomson and Wilson of Kendal.
From David Taylor, there is a 1891 Census entry for Levens, 1 Rose Cottages for Nicholas Addison age 42, General Carter, and wife Margaret age 32, both born Levens.
Nicholas is listed in the 1902 Census aged 53, Carter, living in Beathwaite Green in the Civil Parish of Levens and belonging to Levens, St Johns the Evangelist Church. Also listed in the 1902 Census there is a woman, Mary J Esculme, aged 40, listed as a servant to the family. It would appear Nicholas' wife Margaret had died and he had taken on a housekeeper.
There is another family document which discusses his purchase from a Mr John Walter Richardson Stones of a small parcel of land fronting the road leading from Levens Bridge to Beathwaite Green on 11 May 1907. Nicholas was referred to as a Carter. He paid six pounds for the property which was adjacent to his own land and was of about 48 square yards. As part of the agreement, Nicholas had to buid and maintain a stone fence between the two properties.

Nicholas married Margaret (Unknown) ADDISON in Levens, Westmorland, UK. Margaret was born in 1859 in Levens, Westmorland, UK.
Children from this marriage were:
+ 39 M i. John ADDISON was born on 27 Apr 1889 in Levens, Westmorland, UK.
+ 40 F ii. Margaret Jane ADDISON was born about 1895 in Levens, Westmorland, UK.

General Notes: James Addison was from Levens, Westmorland County, UK. He married Jane Powley and they are believed to have lived in Beetham, close to Arnside, for a time, where their first son, Thomas Powley was born according to the 1881 Census. They then returned to Levens where the middle son, Peter was born. By the time the third son, George Gibson was born they had returned to Arnside. They were in Arnisde for the birth of their first daughter, Isabella, in 1883, but later moved to Silverdale, Lancashire, further south along the coast where a second daughter Mary was born in 1886. Finally they moved to Southport in the 1890s where daughter Agnes was born in 1897.
Marjorie Pearce has mentioned haviing a letter from her great Aunt which mentions Jim Addison as living in Southport. There is also another reference to the family as living at 20 Poulton Road, Southport. In the 1944 letter of Peter Addison (a nephew) Jim of Southport, Lancs was referrred to as having passed on at least 3 years earlier.
Penelope Messenger in her letter states that her Great Grandfather James lived at 20 Poulton Road, Southport and died there in September 1930. In her second letter she states that in the 1940s her family had moved to Nottingham, and therefore the house which her great grandfather James Addison had lived in Southport since the 1890s was occupied by another family. 15,16
Research Notes: The Family Bible lists him as born 10 May 1850 and Levens baptisms registry contains the following entry: 10 May 1850 James, son of Peter and Jane Addison of Mop Road, farmer.
James is listed in the 1851 UK Census as being 10 months old and living with an uncle George GIBSON and Gibsons mother and two sisters. As the last son in a family of six children, it is possible that he was raised by his uncle George, his mother Jane's brother, and his mother and two sisters.
In 1876 James was involved in the settling of his mother's sister, Elizabeth's estate. He paid the succession duty on the two cottages which she owned which were at Bridge Inn Row Levens and were occupied by Christopher Clark and Thomas Noble. The document lists him as born 10 May 1850 and as "a descendant of a sister of the said Elizabeth Gibson."
The 1892 Ownership electors list for Levens polling district includes; James Addison of 20 Poulton Lane Southport owning a freehold cottage in Beathwaite Green. The 1892 Occupation other than lodgers electors list for Levens polling district includes; Nicholas Addison, Beathwaite Green and Thomas Addison Beathwaite Green, but gives no fuller address.
James and family are listed in the 1902 UK census as living at 20 Poulton Road, Soutport. James was 50 at the time and his occupation was listed as Gardener Jobbing.

At some point before 1907 he and his family moved to Southport, Lancashire. There he met and married Florence Pillinger (Grannie Hine). Florence's people were from Wiltshire. Aunt Hilda thinks that Thomas may have been a gardener and Florence worked "in service", as a house servant. They emigrated to Toronto in 1907. A carpenter, he built the family house at 60 Ferrier St in Toronto. Sons Herbert James and Kenneth Peter were born in 1909 and 1910 and then Thomas died in 1915, two weeks before the birth of Hilda.
There is a family story (from Pat) that he was found one day lying in the street, incapacitated by some unknown malady. Medical records indicate Florence took him to the Reception Hospital which was a sanatorium or mental institution on at 651 Broadview off the Danforth, because of his symptoms. He died several weeks later.
Hilda remembers her mother Florence having him buried in the St. John's Norway Cemetery in East Toronto (Woodbine and Kingston Road). When Hilda was a child she and her mother visited the gravesite regularly to pay their respects. Tim visited his gravesite in 2001 when he was in the area to visit Hilda. His grave is unmarked.
Tim has some of his carpentry tools and a book on housebuilding which he likely used in the building of the house at 60 Ferrier Street.

When she discovered this she gave him a strong talking to about his future. Hine left shortly after and returned to England and was never heard from again.
