| The counterscarp is the outer slope of
the moat. A gallery built into this face could bring fire upon attackers
crossing the moat or scaling the walls.
In Southsea Castle the openings of the gallery can be seen in the counterscarp wall. The tunnel running around the galleries is linked by a bomb proof passage (caponier) linking the front of the fort with the counterscarp. |
