A Quick History 


Built for passengers  
The pier was built as a landing stage for paddle steamers crossing to the Isle of Wight. The railway station at at Granada road made it a convenient landing point for passengers. 
Roaring success as a film set.  
The pier was used in 1974 as a location for the film "Tommy" staring Roger Daltery. It was during this filming that the pier burnt down a second time. 
1970s style not Victorian  . 
Despite its Victorian origins the pier has a distinctive 70's atmosphere. This is a result of a major rebuild after the fire.

1879 The Pier is built 
1885 Nearby railway terminus built in Granada road. 
1904 First Fire 
1923 Railway station closed 
1908 The Pier re-opens, this time with at theatre and roller skating rink 
1974 The pier again burns down and is rebuilt.
