to Southampton water.
Such

in Britain guaranteed it almost 400 years of military occupation. Today

The mile long shingle spit that guards
the entrance to Southampton water was formed when the sea broke through
what is now the Needles channel. An event that occurred when sea levels
rose after the Ice age. Tides deposited gravels from the now drowned river
bed along the new coast forming spits at Calshot,Hurst,Stone point and
Needs Ore.
The spit formed a perfect location for
one of Henry the VIII's Coastal fortifications which was adapted to serve
right up to the second world war. In the last century a seaplane base was
built at Calshot and the modern structures of the Lifeboat house and Coastgaurd
tower arrived in the 1970s.
Today the spit is put to great use with
Hampshire county councils adventure centre.
The spit can be reached by Bus from Hythe
or Southampton and the castle is open to the public. |
