Tater Du's unusual design is a result of being comparatively modern, the last lighthouse to be built in Cornwall. It was built in 1965 as a completely automatic installation, remotely controlled from the Trinity House depot in Penzance.
The short building houses a 7 foot 1 inch lantern and its honeycombed front was designed to hold an array of Sound signals.

The construction of Tater Du light was the result of a tragedy. On the 23rd of October 1963 the Juan Ferrer, a small coaster ran aground on the nearby Boscawen point. The vessel capsized with the loss of 11 lives. The Newlyn and Mousehole Fisherman's association set messages to Trinity house calling for a light to be set up. The fishermen  stated that many similar tragedies had only been avoided by the prompt action of coast guards warning vessels off the cliffs.
The £60000 light was built in response to the plea on a flat area under Rosemordress cliffs.
