The Overgrown Penlee Battery
Penlee Point's strategic position at the entrance to Plymouth Sound made it a key location within the defence system of Plymouth. The headland had several installations built  on it, the most important one being Penlee Battery.
This was located on the high ground above Adelaide's chapel but trees have now shielded its view from the sea.
Despite the batteries large size it has now almost totally disappeared beneath earth in deliberate attempt to remove it from the landscape. Penlee point battery battery now forms part of a Nature reserve with public access from a car park.  One gun emplacement, some exposed concrete and rusting fence is all that remains of this once important fortification.
The photograph above is looking Eastwards with the sea and the gun emplacement location to the right.
