Folks Like Us
We are strange people. We must be - if the rest of the world keeps shaking their heads at us. The harder they shake their heads, the harder we work at the very thing the "Normal" folks are shaking their heads at.
From the time we are born we are "groomed" to grow up and toe the line. Mom and Dad want us to grow up and Get a Job. SOCIETY wants us to grow up and Get a Job. We go to school for an intolerable length of time, only to graduate, get The Job, and wonder if this is all that life holds for us.
Some of us show early warning signs of the strange beings we will eventually become by being the Little Entrepeneurs of the neighborhood. We continue with the Lemonade Stand all summer, when the rest of the kids are traipsing back and forth to the pool and the park, all the while shaking their heads and laughing at us, telling us we are missing out on all the fun - and all this while they plunk down their money and drink our lemonade. Who's the one with the new skateboard in September?
We are the ones that win the awards for selling the most candy bars door-to-door and raise the most money for the school trips, because we seem to have the built-in "Salesmanship" gene.
We're the ones that come up with the cockamame fund-raising ideas that "will never work", but somehow always do, if we're left to our own devices and given free reign.
As children, we are considered "precocious", and "bright". Mom and Dad are proud, and tell us that we'll surely "Make Something" of ourselves one day....
But when we grow up they tell us, along with the rest of society, that it's time to drop all that childish stuff, and settle down to the real business of life: eking out a living at the J.O.B. - JOB SECURITY means a lot, you know.
Yes, WE know. JOB SECURITY is now a thing of the past, but the rest of the world still wants to dream that dream. If they just keep their noses to the grindstone they'll come out okay in the long run.
"Folks Like Us" know that The Long Run generally ends up being a pittance (if any) of a retirement fund. We won't be satisfied with that. "Folks Like Us" don't generally "retire"! We work our butts off and build a "Residual" income, so that we can work when we want to - and we are almost always working anyway... because we LOVE what we do!
When we do start making money, the head-shaking turns into a different sort: "How do you DO that??" Gee, you've only been WATCHING me for the last five years!
This is where "Friends & Family" finally become interested. They want a crack at "What We Do", because it looks like easy money. "After all, John, you have it made! It's not like you actually have to WORK..."
When they don't make money overnight, they blame it on everything but their lack of desire to work. "Normal" people cannot seem to think in terms of anything but the Hourly Wage. "If I work 40 hours a week, I'll make X amount of money. It's dependable. It doesn't matter if I hate the job and have to kiss the butt of the guy on the higher rung of the ladder. At least I'm getting a paycheck."
That's not enough for "Folks Like Us". We're different. We WANT something different! And it's a good thing, too.
Because "Folks Like Us" invented electricity, and indoor plumbing. They invented the washing machine. The vacuum cleaner. The "Horseless Carriage". The computer. "Folks Like Us" put men on the moon, and found cures for deadly diseases. They wrote the songs that make us laugh and cry. They put the stars on the silver screen. They ARE the stars on the silver screen. "Normal" people laughed at them too.
If you're about to give it all up, and stick with the "Normal" people, I wish you'd change your mind. Find your "Weird" genes again. Think your strange thoughts. Be your oddball self. The world will never be kind to "Folks Like Us". But whether they will admit it or not, they need us!
