This chieftain, the celebrated "Outlaw Murray", who with five hundred of his men, bid defiance to the King of Scotland, James IV, is immortalized in a beautiful ballad of the Scottish Border, "for ages", wrote Sir Walter Scott, "a popular song in Selkirkshire." He was High Sheriff of Selkirkshire 1509; married Janet Forrester, widow of Knochhill. John was killed in 1510.
