Notes for Dr. Charles Pemberton Murray:

This In Memoriam was presented at a service for Dr. Charles Pemberton Murray held in New York, June 1, 1890.

"The news of the death of Dr. Charles. P. Murray, at his home in Southern California, on the 3rd of May, was received by his many friends in this city with shock, for although he had been an invalid for several years, his courage and hopefulness had made those who loved him feel that he might be spared to enjoy his happy home. His life of thirty-four years seems a short one, but measured by the experience of these years, it was not so. 'We live in feelings, not in figures on a dial. We should count time by heart-throbs," and though his sun went down at noonday, he had enjoyed and suffered much. It was a life full of pathetic incident, and it is a memory his friends would not willingly let die. He was the youngest son of Hamilton Murray, a name well known in this city half a century ago. In 1846, Mr. Murray (Hamilton) removed to Oswego, and his pleasant home, Greenvale, near that city, is still remembered by many who enjoyed its hospitality. Here Mr. Murray's four children were born, and a happier household could hardly be imagined. The first shadow upon it came with his (Hamilton Murray's) long illness and death in 1866, and the news of the death of Dr. Murray (Charles) will recall the later sorrows, which invested his life with an almost tragic interest. Many will remember the sad circumstances of the loss of Dr. Murray's brother and sister on the Ville de Havre, a few months after the death of his mother and younger sister, leaving him the sole survivor of his family. These sorrows came to this bright, happy boy as he was beginning his college life at Princeton, and made him the object of special interest. Surrounded by devoted friends, he passed his college days, and then found a home among relatives in this city while he pursued the study of medicine. He traveled extensively for several years and then began his professional career, which promised much usefulness, for he had an enthusiastic devotion to it. The experience he acquired at "Roosevelt", the "Nursery and Child's Hospital" and the "Hospital for Crippled Children" in 42d Street, was of great value to him. Soon after he had settled down to the practice of his profession, a severe cold developed serious difficulty with his lungs and necessitated his relinquishing its pursuit. His disappointment was extreme, but he bade his friends a cheerful farewell, and with them trusted that a few years spent in a milder climate would restore his health. He married in Southern California and made a most attractive home near Lamanda Park. He threw himself heartily into the interests of the people-planting avenues of shade trees and improving the public roads. He was active in the erection of a fine public school building for the settlement, which was comparatively a new one, and helpful in every thing connected with the church at San Gabriel. The last few years of Dr. Murray's life were most happy and useful. His bright, sunny disposition endeared him to all about him, and supported by a strong Christian faith, and tenderly nursed by his devoted wife, who with her three little children left to mourn his loss, he passed peacefully to 'the rest that remaineth for the people of God."
