Handel's Hallelujah!

Handel’s oratorio: The Messiah

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah!

For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.

The kingdoms of this world
Are become the kingdoms of our Lord!

Hallelujah!

From the Internet: An oratorio is a large-scale choral work, with solo vocal roles, accompanied by an orchestra. Its most distinctive characteristic however, is that unlike opera, it is not dramatised. Although many oratorios still retain the theatrical dimension, no costumes, props, sets or acting is involved.

It is said that while writing Messiah (essentially the 18th-century equivalent of modern-day musicals) Handel literally saw visions of the subject about which he was writing; and, while composing the Hallelujah chorus, he "saw Heaven opened and the host of it worshipping the Glory of God." When listening to his music, and hearing the lyrics of the various portions of Messiah, one can truly believe Handel was thus honored.
