2005 - Fujian Dialect and my mum. |

In Hong Kong,
Fujian dialect is not a common medium. In other
words, it may be regarded as a sublanguage. However, I am so
familiar with this dialect. Fujian dialect is almost
indispensable to me everyday. My mom says "wah ki but gus che
lau bea". Do you know what her saying means? Actually, she says
that she goes
to North Point to find her father. My family lived in North
Point ten years ago. North point is so-called 'little Fujian'
where many Fujianese live together. They are a group of people
who communicate with same dialect. Based on Raymond Williams's
'Culture is ordinary', Fujian dialect is also a kind of culture to Fujianese.
In this culture, probably my mother and I who share the same value of the
culture are included. |

Although Fujianese is a minority group compared with Cantonese
in Hong Kong, I am happy to know most Fujianese are accepted in
this society. They are incorporated and be respectful in Hong
Kong. My mum thinks of the day she came to Hong Kong in 50s,
most mainland Chinese are subordinated, especially at that time she couldn't speak
Cantonese. In contrast with that time, she says "Hong Kong changes a lot". |
