2002 - Observation from Wai Chan to Chai Wan |
| |
| |
After a meeting in school, I walk alone from Wan Chai Ferry
Pier to my home --- Chai Wan. Many pedestrians walk past me.
Some pedestrians are foreigners but I can not recognize their
nationalities. Whatever nationality they are, they seem to be
visitors rather than local people. At the end of pedestrian
bridge, there is an immigration tower. Outside the migration
tower, some electronic transfer machines are queuing by some
people. Another pedestrian bridge is connected from immigration
tower and Wan Chai MTR station. Many vehicles, included City
buses, taxis and trucks, etc, travel at a high speed under the
bridge. Some beggars are lying in the middle of the bridge.
After going through the bridge, I come to Hennessy Road. There
are many commercial buildings including Heng Seng Bank, Joint
Publishing and Computer centre, etc. Unlike other countries,
Commerce, Art and Technology related buildings closely built in
a very limited
area in Hong Kong. Food market is also just adjacent to urban library on
other sides of the same road. Plenty of western restaurants are there, for instances, McDonald, Faire Wood, KFC, etc.
Besides, Chinese restaurants are also built everywhere. Most
interestingly, I observe a number of sign boards are hanging on over my head in the
air. Most of them are red words with yellow background, like
McDonald. If it is a Chinese restaurant, the sign boards
probably are red background due to traditional
Chinese culture. Sometimes I also can notice that some sign
boards are written with other languages, especially Japanese. I
come to Causeway Bay along Hennessy Road about a half hour
later. There are three large posters hanged outside Sogo.
A bookshop called Causeway bookshop is on the opposite
side. Kitty Café, Baleno, Karaoke lounge and other businesses
are there. Many people are there even on working days.
A 8P bus stops in a bus stop, and then many people get on
quickly one by one. A learning driver sitting with a teacher drives a
small van slowly on the road. "Boo…" Some red public
vans give signals loudly to push the driving van to "give way".
The traffic situation is extremely busy in Yee Wo Street. Today
is Sunday. Hundreds of female Philippians are gathering in Victoria Park. They seem very enjoying on
chatting something that I don't know. A hawker is selling some
drinks and ice-creams with a trolley. Two athletes are buying
distilled waters at that moment. One of them is holding a ball
in his hand. Pedestrians are lesser and lesser when I walk towards Tin Hu compared with Causeway Bay and Wan Chai.

On the road home, I
walk passed Tin Hu, North Point, Shau Kei Wan and Chai Wan. It
is quite interesting that Shau Kei Wan is the most crowd place
among them. The road in Tiu Hu is very silent. Central library,
King's college, etc. gives me a strong studying atmosphere. In
North Point, I am caught by a building named Sing Pao. I think
that later or sooner I may work there. And, there is lots of
Fujianese. It makes me to think about my identity. Maybe I am
one of them. In Quarry Bay, I stop in front of the public
library. Indeed, it recalls my memory that I was facing HKCEE
and HKALE. I have once spent much time on there. Some secondary
classmates' faces are suddenly appearing in my mind. Yes. I
remember them. They are my good friends when I was studying
secondary school. |

From Shau Kei Wan to Chai Wan, a road named Chai Wan road
connects these two places together. Although Shau Kei Wan is
very crowd, I don't like it. Because of its big street market,
Shau Kei Wan is always a very noisy place to me. Chai Wan road
is quite long. I spend nearly an hour to walk passed. At the end
of Chan Wan road, I see my home. |
