Star Race was one of only two true wide-bodied System 80 games produced (the other being Circus), however it had an even lower production run - the lowest production run of all the System 80 games (except Eclipse). It's enormous size no doubt limited its sales potential, at a time when Gottlieb's competitors were bringing out standard sized games with split playfield levels and speech effects. |
The Internet Pinball Database doesn't credit the game's artist, however from the style of the artwork, and especially the curvaceous girls on the backglass (see picture), it appears to be the handiwork of Gordon Morison. (Can anyone confirm or deny this?) If so, it would represent his last work on a Gottlieb game. | As a wide-bodied game, the playfield has plenty of space and on Star Race it's fairly packed with features including a pair of Gottlieb's unique Vari-targets, offering satisfying shots from both the left and right flippers. Unlike most wide-bodied games, Star Race is not too slow playing and there are plenty of interesting shots to make the length and breadth of the enormous playfield. The nicest of these shots is undoubtedly the turnaround loop at the top left of the playfield. |
