In the early eighteen hundreds, the fontange styles were finally replaced by simpler, more practical

hairstyles. Hair was mostly styled loosely around the face and twisted into a roll or a bun worn very close to

the top of the head, down towards the neck, or even arranged around the face.  Powder is still being used at

this time and is done only in the case of formal occasions.

Nearing the end of the eighteenth century hairstyles picked up in size and volume once again, this time to

extremes in fullness. An example of this would be the hedgehog fashion, in which the hair is curled up around

the face, very full and wide, with long locks hanging down the back. The largest hairstyles were constructed in

1770s, with the aid of a towering structure supplemented by feathers, jewels, ribbons, and seemingly almost

anything a lady could perch on top of her head (Tortora & Eubank pg. 242).

Now that we have covered the basics for the seventeen and eighteen hundreds, lets begin to look at the

modern hairstyles, that you would most likely look at while walking down the street.

Hairstyles today seem to be based upon the natural look. People spend hours a day in front of the mirror

trying to get their hair to look as though it is wind blown and tousled, but not messy, which to most seems to

be an art in itself. But keeping the eighteenth century hairstyles in mind, today things seem to be on a much

more maintainable and maneuverable scale, to a certain extent.

In the world of mens fashions today, as it was in the eighteen hundreds, facial hair is prevalent. Although,

the sculptured pointed beard of the eighteen hundreds, today facial hair is most popular kept at a minimum.

There are still many men who do not follow the norms, and either sculpt creative goatees, or grow a full beard,

but the most popular ways of maintaining facial hair is either stubble or a mild goatee. See figures 5 and 6 for

examples of fashionable facial hair.

Figure 6: Brad Pitt wearing the stubble form of facial hair. With todays more relaxed ways, stubble is a way men can go for the rustic look, which is also very popular.
In modern hairstyles for men, there is not that much of a variation. There are no uses of massive wigs, or

hair powder, but the use of hairspray and gel could be considered closely enough related. There are two main

distinct styles that are prevalent within the male population as of now. Those two being, the short to mid length

hair, or longer relaxed style. The short to midway styles are easy to maintain, and are usually styled with hair

products, to give it texture. Most men tend to push the hair upward in order to create a mildly spiky

appearance. Men who are hard workers, and need to have their hair out and away from their face usually wear

this style.
