THE COMMERCIAL COMPLEX OF SURDULICA

Commerce in the Past

         Handicrafts used to be the main branch of commerce in the old days. First significant documents that tell of trade in Surdulica originate from times after liberation from Turks (1877.) Handicrafts, inns, and grocery stores were present.Since Surdulica had officially become a town in 1887. and after completion of Nis-Skoplje railway, trade began to develop rapidly. Surdulica became an important trading post for importing and exporting of goods in southern Serbia. Fruit, vegetables, wood and cattle and cattle products were exported.

In 1922. the "Surdulica circulation bank" was founded. The total sum of the basic capital was million dinars. This bank had an important role in the total money turnover in the town.

Prosperity of Surdulica is the result of industrial development which began after the World War II, in 1948. when stone quarry "Vardenik" was opened. New industrial facilities had been constructed in the following years.

Commerce Today

         Today, more than a half of total income of Surdulica commerce is achieved in industry (57,3%). Construction contributes with 12,1 %, trade with  9 % and agriculture with 8,4 % of total budget. Public sector is larger and it has greater income (about 50%). Mixed sector has 29 %, private, about 20 % and collective (agricultural) about 1 %. Trade and inkeeping  constitute the largest part of private sector (87,7%).

         Vlasina hydroelectric power stations, which are in fact a unique system of power stations in Vrla river valley use water from accumulation at Vlasinsko lake. They were constructed in period 1947-56. Four power stations use capacities of Vlasinsko and Lisinsko lakes with 109 million m3 of water. With their ten generators of 129 MW they produce 170 million KWh a year.

         Industry and mining include metal complex, nonmetal refining, lumber industry, production of textile goods, leather footwear, leather goods and food industry.
