Been doing computer work all week.

Typical Malaysia couldn't go to the FINAS movie show cos someone had complained to the government that they show indecent films.. (they don't) so it had been closed own

Finally got around to watching Rudra's Nepali documentaries : Bonded For Generations about the bonded labourers in Nepal, Gurkhas' Blues - about unfair treatment of Gurkha Soldiers, Crime and Correction about the justice system in Nepal - all very professionally done - good for specialists, but of limited appeal to the general public

Friday - ?? Times Square

Bonded For Generations - They are mostly Kamaiya who used to own in the forest areas, but when malaria was eradicated outsiders moved in and enslaved them. Many politicians and rich people have these slaves and only a few try to improve the situation. It's illegal under the constitution but at the time of film making the government wasn't doing anything to enforce the law. but during filming demonstrations were organised and in year 2000 the government took measures to end it. 50% of people are now free, but facing re-adjustment problems e.g. they are squatting on government land etc. So can you say that the film contributed to changing the peoples lives ?

Gurkas' Blues made for the ex-soldiers association (www.gaeso.org.uk) the film documents the injustices to the soldiers e.g. not given compensation after WW2 sent home, were recruited on false promises. The British used if a different system for Nepali soldiers they received much lower wages and their service term was set to be much shorter than for British soldiers allowing the British to pay them much lower pensions Again I think many things have changed since the making of the film. The Japanese paid compensation, (and after the war British broke their promises to everyone cos they had no money left) The soldiers knew the terms when they signed up from the beginning the British employed the Gurkhas cos they were cheap worked for lower wages and didn't qualify for full pensions. Otherwise they wouldn't have employed them. Current Gurkhas now work on much fairer terms.

Crime and Correction (44 min bloody crime scene documentary showing the state of the Justice system in Nepal) Maybe of interest to Police, Attornys and foreign aid agencies. 2500 murders a year in Nepal. Film follows 72 hours of the work of crime investigation unit Quite favourable to Police. Raises the question: why don't accused get legal aid lawyers or know that they can bring a lawyer ?

Why are they taken to the government attorney and then court instead of the government coming to them ? Some prisoners are not even handcuffed.

No defense attorney in most trials, but upto 50% do get legal aid shows ssomething is happening. Through an org called cellRD.
Marijuanna case for 2 people decided in just a 30 min court case.
Mentions jails are unfit for human habitation. Big prison in Kathmandu seems OK
1. before Youth offenders were not seprated from adults
2. prisoners dependent young children stayed in jail with them
Reoffending rate is very high

Inside I saw they had 2 dry themepark areas, a tiger cage aswell. It was reasonably busy, but it's pretty big. They had a special offer of a $10 wrist band to go on the rides. I explorered first and put my clothers in a locker, this is where it became more Malaysian : When I went to pay they wanted to see my ticket again which I had just locked in the locker. That day the park was open till midnight cos of the surf demonstraions and festival, but the rides were closing at 6pm and 7pm. So by the time I paid I was only able to go on 3 rides, others you need 2 people of need to hire a tube also. but it was OK for 10R. Then I went back to the water park where one large pool was set up as disco and the main beach had the concert. They did actually surf, cos the beach has a wave machine and wet bike, but the surfing wasn't amazing,They had Skateboard demo aswell. The concert was OK but not my style.
Saturday - We went to the free film festival at Times Square, but it turned out to be a bit crap. Just to find out what films were on you had to buy a $10 movie magazine. And it seemed that the movies were just crappy American stuff. In the paper it said that there would be surfing demonstrations at the Sunway pryramid shopping center.

I knew there was a water park there, but I wondered how tey could demonstrate surfing without the sea. Since it was free I decided to trek out there and see for myself. Akiko was sceptical about whether it would be free so she wouldnn't come . For once it wasn't a disappointment Firstly you see a Sphinx and the Pyramid entrance to the shopping center, where the desk did give a free ticket and directed me thro the shops on the way I passeed the ice skating rink (16Rm). Then I got the first glimpse of the water park. Wow it does look amazing : even better that the photos like Not the typical peeling pint of Malaysia but like Disneyland a whole valley filled with beaches, water slides pools, volcano, a rope bridge going from side to side. The walls Surrounded by green gardens and luxury buildings, hotels and Monash university above it all.

Sunday I went back to walk around another lake park in Subang Jaya, and since Shah Alam was 2 train stops down I went there to explore the new city centered around a large mosque and lake gardens.

The bus company just offered 2500 in compensation I suggested 3000, waiting to check with Michael Chong
