Is it best to get estimates from several other contractors?

Obtaining numerous free estimates generally increases the confusion of the consumer.  An unknowledgeable customer will generally get apples to bananas bids, and a lot of sales hype.  Costing out a construction project is time consuming and costly for a contractor.  The cost of the estimate will get paid by someone eventually. 

It is best to hire a honest, reliable, and experienced contractor right from the beginning.  Obtaining such a person through either referrals or checking job and sub-contractor references, is the most effective approach.  An honest, and respected contractor will get you the best price anyway.  Low bids are usually oversight estimates or scams.
