What is Sea Glass?

Sea glass is glass that has been worn smooth by the sea. It can be found in every color of the spectrum and washes up on beaches throughout the world. Most sea glass comes from broken pieces of glass but sea glass can also be found as whole items such as marbles and bottles.

Glass becomes sea glass when:

  1. A piece of glass has been tumbled by natural wave action to the point where there are no sharply-defined edges or corners, and
  2. The natural action of elements in the water along with sunlight and tumbling action have produced a unique frosted or etched surface covering all sides of the glass.

Common colors of sea glass are white, amber, seafoam green and olive green. Uncommon colors are aqua, teal, lime green, emerald green, gray, cobalt blue and cornflower blue. Rare colors are red, pink, yellow, orange, black and lavender.
