Bahamas

Visited by Christopher Columbus in 1492, but first permanent European settlement was not made until 1647 by British and Bermudan religious refugees. It became a British Crown Colony in 1717 and became independent in 1973. (Here I suggest a visit to this link and follow the 'Christopher Colombus link - a wonderful stamps list at Philately.com - aj) Postage stamps have been issued since 1859.
