a japanese temple
unlike korea, japanese cities are full of temples for buddhism and shrines for shintoism.  shinto shrines tend to be dedicated to a specific god (studying, business, etc) and there are hundreds. back home more pretty kyoto!
higoshi temple compound, which you can sort of make out here, was originally built to rival nigoshi temple, and is only a 10 minute walk away.
this is a temple from downtown kyoto, whose name i cannot remember...  nigoshi?  i had it to myself, that's all that matters.
unfortunately, there are no longer hundreds of monks available for maintenance, so most temples have netting around the intricate eaves, to prevent pigeons from becoming the new painters.
this gate (nigoshi) is a national treasure, and on the other side is a fairly old university, built in English-style buildings.
