that was tani house, the hostel i stayed four nights in. charming house (even if the room i shared with five others was a little chilly), charming mrs. tani who runs it. and extremely cheap. if you ever go to kyoto, i recommend it. private rooms are slightly more expensive. |

this is one of the three systems of japanese writing. no resemblance to any of the three alphabets i know. i was effectively illiterate for 5 days, and it's a terrible feeling. japanese have not embraced english labelling like the koreans have. |
