Mission Statement of CYLC
 
The purpose of CYLC is to develop leadership skills for Chicana and Chicano youth in San Diego through dialogue, education, mentorship and support. The following are the goals of CYLC:

1.
Develop leadership skills such as critical reading, clear writing, public speaking, running meetings, and other organizing skills.
 
2.
Discuss inter-group conflict and analyze the issues that create division within the Chicano Community.
 
3.
Promote academic excellence and aid participants in defining their educational futures.
 
4.
Create an awareness of gender issues and knowledge of how sexism affects our community.
 
5.
Educate participants about Chicano history and the current issues facing the Chicano Community.
 
6.
Establish a plan of action to create change within their own lives and in their community.
 
 

The Actual Camp

 
The Camp takes place in the month of June on the campus of San Diego State University. The campers participate in group discussions, activities as well as create a personal Action Plan that they will implement into their personal lives and communities. They will also have the opportunity to listen and ask questions to community leaders and professionals from around San Diego County.

Day 1
Introduction to leadership skills, communication and networking

Day 2
Topics include Cultural history and Problem solving through brainstorming, team-building and introduction to Action Plans.

Day 3
Topics toward individual development, dealing with Cultural Identity, stereotypes, and prejudices.

Day 4
Emphasis on gender separate and group exercises dealing with sexism, homophobism and sexuality.

Day 5
Topics dealing with family issues, goal setting and identity.

Day 6
Sunrise hike, presentation of Action Plans and closure.

 
 
Steering Committee
 

Joe Lara-Founder of the Camp

A principal at the Mac Charter School in Chula Vista. He is married with two children. He continues to participate on the steering committee helping to raise money for the camp.

Gretel Rodriguez -Director 2007

An English teacher at Otay Ranch High School. She is married with two children and has participated at all levels of the camp for five years.

Sandra Nunez-Assistant Director 2007

A homemaker that is married with two children. Has participated in the camp at all levels for five years.

Veronica Baez- Assistant Director 2007

A college student trying to earn her bachelors' degree. She has participated on the steering committee.
