| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Folk Art Exhibition Opens in Somers September 2004, Somers, NY - An exhibition featuring Folk Art from Somers Historical Society and Town of Somers Wright Reis collections opens next month at Somers Historical Society Museum, announced Museum Curator Terry Ariano. The exhibit entitled �What is Folk Art? A Somers View� is being organized by Somers Historical Society with funding from New York State Legislature through efforts of Senator Vincent Leibell. The exhibition officially opens to the public at 2pm on Thursday, October 7 at the Elephant Hotel in Somers, NY. It will be on view through September 2005. �The exhibition explores the many forms and definitions for Folk Art, both historical and contemporary,� explained Ms. Ariano. �The contemporary Folk Art segment of the exhibition will rotate in two-month periods over the year. In this way, we will be able to show many different forms of work by regional Folk Artists,� Ms. Ariano concluded Contemporary works by the following artists will be on display through November 28th:: Susan Slyman, paintings, Amy Farrell, Polaroid transfers; Georgia Heller, quilts; Dave Tischler, mechanical toys and other assemblages; Harry Bova, wood carved canes. In addition, photographic enlargements by Kevin Monaghan of �in situ� examples of Folk Art in Somers will be exhibited in the Meeting Room of the Elephant Hotel. They include buildings and architectural details from King Kone, Muscoot Farm, and various other Somers locations. Highlights of the Historical Society collection of Folk Art to be shown are � Ammi Phillips, itinerant folk painter, portraits of Gerard and Roxanna Crane, early Somers residents and menagerie owners; � Seth B. Howes grandfather clock made of printing blocks used to print early menagerie advertisements; and � commemorative Bicentennial quilt made by local residents to commemorate the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976. In conjunction with this exhibition, a series of special programs are scheduled throughout the year. The first two are: � October 24, 1pm, Elephant Hotel �Somers residents Dave and Muriel Tischler will discuss and demonstrate their work which is part of the current contemporary exhibition; � November 14, 1pm, Elephant Hotel � Lee Kogan of American Museum of Folk Art speaking about the parameters of American Museum of Folk Art and the current exhibition at Somers Historical Society. Somers Historical Society is located in the Elephant Hotel at the Junction of Routes 100 & 202 in Somers, NY. �What is Folk Art?
