| Fort #18 ("Hilltop Hotel") January 2001 595 Blocks, 13' 6" High 3 Stories, 2 Doors, 9 Windows Lasted 26 Days (!) On January 14th, 2001, the final block was set atop our largest and most elaborate fort ever. The "Hilltop Hotel", as it was nicknamed, stood some 13 and a half feet high and was made of 595 blocks of snow. It was also the first three-storie fort ever built, with plenty of space on both upper floors. It was truly an accomplishment; the result of years of trial and error. |

| In the 26 days it stood after completion, it attracted the most attention of any of our forts. This was partly because of publicity it received on the front page of a local newspaper. People both young and old came from miles around just to look or have their picture taken beside it. Passers-by would slow down and honk their horns, when driving by our place. And of course, there was the fun of just having such a novelty on our own front lawn. This fort didn't require as much maintenence as some later ones, but it still had its share of structural problems which ultimately led to the decision to remove it. There were bigger forts still to come, but whether the future ones were better is subject to debate..... |
