Chapter One

"We are *so* not dinky little freshmen anymore, Nora!" Jessica Crier exclaimed and widened her eyes as she stared at someone over my shoulder. "He's looking over here!"
"Who?" I asked.
"Jesse Winthrop!" Jessica said. Her blue eyes were sparkling with excitement as she flipped her long blond hair over her shoulder. "Nora- I think he likes you!"
I shook my head. "No *way,* Jess. There is *no way* Jesse Winthrop would like *me.*"
"There are lots of ways, Nora. Trust me. There's your hair-"
"Ugly."
"Your awesome green eyes."
"Too bright."
"Your winning personality."
"Hardly winning."
"It's everything, Nora. You're too hard on yourself, honest-oh my gosh, Nora. He's walking over here."
"You're kidding."
Jess shook her head. "No."
And then I heard the  voice of Jesse Winthrop behind me. "Hey. I wanted to come over and introduce myself. I'm Jesse."
I was afraid to even turn around.
"Hi, i'm Jessica. Hey Nora. Look who came over to say hi," Jessica said. She spun me around.
I looked up. There stood Jesse, tall and really nice looking with dark brown hair and hazel eyes, grinning at me. Despite my weak knees and jumbled nerves, I smiled really big and said, "Hi! I'm Nora. Whatever possessed you to come over here?"
"Well, I wanted to know if you guys wanted to come with me and the rest of the group to a party tomorrow night," Jesse replied.
"Oh, i can't. I'm leaving for the week tomorrow. But Nora can go, can't you?" Jessica nodded her head.
"Uh, yeah, sure. I can go. Where should i meet you?" I asked.
"How about your house at five o'clock?"
"Okay, do you need my address?"
He shook his head. "Nope. Just your phone number."
And so i gave it to him.
"I'll call you," he said as he walked away.
We waited until he was out of earshot to lose control. "Oh my gosh! Jesse Winthrop has your number! Nora, he definitely likes you," Jess said.
"You think so?" I asked.
"Yes! Did you see the way he was looking at you and how he was talking to you? It's so obvious!"
