Chapter Two

I guess I should stop everything and tell you a little bit more about myself and my situation. I'm Nora Reiss. I'm about five foot with red hair and green eyes. My best friend is Jessica Crier and my crush is Jesse Winthrop. We (meaning Jessica and I) were going into our sophomore year and Jesse was going to be a junior.
I checked myself over one more time in the full length mirror. My eighth grade brother James walked into my room, eating a candy bar. "You goin' out or something?"
"What does it look like?" I snapped.
"Sorry," James said.
"No, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap at you like that. I'm just nervous, that's all. How do I look?" I asked.
"Cool. Not too preppy, not too grungy, it's just right. Want some chocolate?" James asked, holding up a chunk of his candy bar.
"Okay, sure." I took a chunk and popped it into my mouth. I had chosen a forest green spaghetti strap dress that came to a few inches above my knee.  When the door bell rang, I almost choked on my candy bar.
"I got it!" James yelled.
I smiled at him. "Thanks."
"Yeah. We wouldn't want Bo or Melanie embarrasing you in front of Jesse, right?" James smiled back.
A few seconds later, I was downstairs saying goodbye to James and Melanie.
"Have fun," James said, eating the last of his candy bar.
There were three other people in the car when I got there.
"Hey you guys. Clear out for Nora," Jesse said. "She's sitting up here."
"Oh, Nora. You get the mighty throne up front. You know what that means," a girl I knew as Daisy said.
"Uh, no. Actually, I don't know what that means," Isaid.
"It means that Jesse really wants to kick it with you, Nora. Be honored. I'm Alan," Alan said.
"Hi, Alan," I replied.
"And I'm Randall. Call me Randy," Randy called from his corner of the back seat.
"You guys aren't serious are you?" I asked.
"Of course we're serious. He never lets new comers sit in the front. Do you-" Randall go cut off by Jesse coming back.
"Are they scaring you in any way, Nora? If they are, we can always ditch them at a gas station." Jesse started the car up and turned to me.
"No, they're being cool. Don't worry about it," I said.
"You sure?"
I nodded. "Yeah."
Alan leaned forward and whispered into my ear, "Now I *know* he wants you. And I'm pretty sure you want him too."
And with that he leaned back in the seat.
"Is Alan right?" Daisy called.
I turned around and gave them a sly grin. "MAybe."
"Is Alan right about what?" Jesse asked.
"Nothing," we all chorused.
