Chapter Two

Nearly three hours later, Paisley and Dave were practically swamped with customers. Paisley was just finishing up a customers drink when she heard a loud voice yelling on the other end of the bar. She glanced down the counter to see Dave furiously wiping the bar with a wet cloth. The customer who had recently been soaked with an alcoholic beverage was standing up shouting curse words in David's direction.

Paisley made her way to Dave just in time to see Mr. Cartwright, her boss, and the owner of Headlights, entering the bar. " Which idiot spilled this drink on one of my best customers?" Daniel Cartwright yelled angrily, instantly getting everyone's attention. People started cattering away from the counter and back to their respective booths and the dance floor. Seeing Dave's unfamiliar face, he walked over to him almost instantly. " Who are you?" Cartwright's voice boomed as he poked Dave in the chest.

" He's the new bartender. I hired him. But I was the one who spilled the drink sir." Paisley lied. She didn't want her boss thinking that she had hired a total idiot.

" Keep your head on straight Summers." Mr. Cartwright said shaking his head in dissappointment as he walked to the small room in the back of the building that he called his "office". Paisley looked at Dave with a sour expression on her face.

" You didn't have to do that you know. I deserved to get yelled at, not you." Dave said, following her back to the other end of the bar. The few customers that had been lingering there had left and the bar that was previously infested with customers was now nearly dead empty.

" I didn't want him to know how retarded I am for hiring you. I thought you'd done this before. You are really gonna need to pay attention in those classes your butt is going to because I'm not gonna take the rap for you everytime you screw up." she replied, looking at him. Feeling partially angry at him, and partially sorry. " Just try to be careful from now on okay?" she finished, looking at him.

" Alright. I'm really sorry about that. It won't happen again." he replied. It was now nine o'clock and time for someone else's shift to start.

" Well we have a bartending class to get to in fifteen minutes, so wait here and we can take a cab together." Paisley said, as the reflief shift came in. Paisley retrieved her purse and just as she and Dave were about to leave, Mr. Cartwright's voice came from the back room.

" Paisley. I need to see you for a moment." he said. Paisley closed her eyes and swallowed hard.

" Wait here." she told Dave who did exactly that.

" Yes Mr. Cartwright?" Paisley asked as she poked her head into the back room, after making the short walk down the narrow hallway.

" I know you didn't spill that drink on Mr. Furlson. You've been working here the longest out of everyone and you've yet to make a mistake. It was the new kid wasn't it?" Cartwright said. Paisley looked down at her hands. " It's alright. You hired him on the spot, he was probably just nervous. Just be careful what you get yourself into. From now on he is to only work with you, until his classes are complete and I have that license proof in my hand. Do you understand me Miss Summers?"

" Yes sir." Paisley answered, as she watched Mr. Cartwright go back to the papers he was looking over. She walked back to the bar and followed Dave outside to hail a cab. " He knows it was you, and I didn't tell him. He's just smarter than me." she said looking at Dave as they hopped in a cab, one of the few the town actually had.

" You really didn't have to cover my ass." Dave said smiling.

" Yeah I did. You're just like a little kid. You're my responsibility." she said to him, returning the smile, exhausted and glad that the night would soon be over.
