Chapter One

" It wasn't like he didn't expect to see us sneaking around. It's not the first time it's happened." Paisley said into the small cellphone she was holding. Standing outside of Headlights, the bar/night club in which she worked, she was carrying on a conversation with her best friend Stephanie during her break.

" So your boyfriend spent the night again and once again you guys got caught. Your dad really doesn't like him does he?" Stephanie asked her friend. Paisley breathed in the fresh air and prepared for the same old speech as normal.

" My dad doesn't like him because of what happened before. After Orlando dumped me the first time, my dad automatically got this hatred for him because it was my first serious relationship. He just doesn't want to see me get hurt again. My dad has good intentions really he does." Paisley explained, just as she saw her friend and coworker, Lakelynn Jones open the door and pop her head outside, motioning for Paisley to come back inside. " Well listen Steph, I gotta go back to work. Apparently my fifteen minute break was cut to ten minutes without my knowledge."

" Alright girly. I'll talk to you later on. Peace out." Stephanie, Paisley's "coolest" friend replied. Both girls hung up, and Paisley stuffed her small phone into her purse before heading back into the stuffy bar. " What'cha need Lake?" she asked Lakelynn as she slid her black purse under the counter with Lakelynn's. Lakelynn looked up and pointed to the man on the other side of the room sitting in a booth, wearing jeans and a tightfitting white t-shirt.

" He's here for an interview and seeing as boss put you in charge. He'll be back tonight so if you think this guy's good enough, Daniel will check him out." Lakelynn said. Paisley had interviewed four girls and two guys to fill the position left open after former bartender Mike Walkins, walked out on the job. Paisley grabbed the clip board from under the counter and a pen off the counter, before heading over to the guy in the booth. " Hello..." she started as she neared the table. The man automatically stood up and put out his hand to shake hers. After doing so, Paisley instructed him to have a seat.

" I'm here for the bartending job. I saw it posted outside so I thought I'd might as well give it a shot." the man said, smiling a toothy grin. " Here is my resume." he said quickly handing Paisley a paper. She took it, smiling back, and looked it over. Dave Lane.

" It says here that you are a former army ranger, Dave? Is that correct....because it is the only thing listed here. Haven't you had any other jobs?" Paisley asked.

" Not really. I used to work for my grandpap on a farm but I don't think that really qualifies. I came straight out of highschool into the army and just recently ended my three year term. I decided to move out here to Deer Run and try the small town life." Dave said.

" I see. So Dave, do you have your bartending license?" Paisley asked, trying not to sound to professional. Dave shook his head, looking worried. " Well to serve drinks you do have to have one of those." Dave's head dropped and she knew that he was embarassed that he'd applied for a job that he wasn't techniqually qualified. " But, do you have any experience in this area?"

" Well, I used to mix drinks for parties. For friends of course, but I used the same stuff you guys use here." Dave said trying to convince Paisley that he was the man for the job. " I really want and need this job, and I'm willing to do practically anything..."

" Calm down." she replied, smiling warmly, tucking a peice of her hair behind her ear and putting her hand on the top of his. " If you agree to come with me to bartending classes every night for a week, like Lakelynn over there did, you can have the job." She finished sitting back in the booth and looking at him.

" Of course! So when do I start?" he asked her anxiously, his face lit with a bright smile. Paisley looked over her shoulder and saw that Lakelynn's shift was about over and then glanced back at Dave.

" Now." Paisley replied with a more serious tone. It was about five o'clock, and people would be pouring in soon enough. Dave smiled, stood up and followed Paisley to the bar.
