I Quit Smoking

This page is still under construction. But in the mean time, if you are a person with health problems, such as Emphysema, etc., this is the place for you today.

SMOKING: Smoking, and second hand smoke, are the 2 major factors in causing
lung disease including emphysema, sometimes known as COPD, and lung cancer.
Other causes include air pollution from automobiles, factories, and for those
working in polluting environments such as spray painting, etc.

My Experience: I smoked for over 50 years. Yes, I tried several times to quit but
couldn't do it. Why couldn't I quit? Because I didn't really want to quit! I enjoyed
cigarettes. The cough and runny nose I kept blaming on a cold or sinus congestion.
When I began smoking, cigarettes cost $1.20 a carton for generics and name brand cigarettes like Chesterfield, Camels, Old Golds, Pal Malls, etc. cost about $1.80 per
carton. When I finally quit about 2 years ago the cost had risen to $30 a carton and
that was the primary reason I decided it was time to kick the habit. But it was too
late, the damage to the lungs was already done.

Today I have breathing problems, need oxygen on a semi-regular basis; suffer from
high blood pressure, etc. And you can be just like me unless you wake up now.

EMPHYSEMA (COPD): Emphysema is often referred to as COPD. COPD stands for
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and it includes Emphysema and chronic
bronchitis. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are 2 separate but closely related
diseases. When you hear the term COPD, you will also hear the term SOB which
stands for Shortness of Breath. COPD is a non-reversible and progressive disease
and its primary cause is cigarette smoking. It can and often does eventually lead to
lung cancer. Notice I said "non-reversible" and "progressive". This is for all practical
purposes a terminal illness. You may not be able to stop the progression of the
disease, but you CAN slow the progression of the disease. To learn more, visit one
of the web sites linked to the left.  If you have emphysema you also have COPD. To
minimize or slow the progression of the disease, life style changes need to be made.
First and foremost is to quit smoking. Other possible causes include air pollution
and working in a polluting environment such as spray painting, etc. If you need to
work in a polluting environment, try to use protective breathing apparatus to minimize
your chances of developing COPD. The statistics show that more than 10,000,000
Americans suffer from COPD, many of them are smokers or former smokers. And
sadly, over 60,000 die each year from smoking related diseases.
We'd like to hear from you. If you quit smoking, please share with us the method you used to accomplish your goal.
If you have COPD, please share any information you have obtained about the disease and what measure you are
taking to improve your quality of life.
