"On Hill 65 scoping the terrain with "Old Faithful", my Remington 700. With a Match Barrel, 3x by 9x Redfield Variable Scope, and a smooth action, it provided solid reliable accuracy. 15 confirmed kills and 30 - 40 unconfirmed in 6 months is a testimony to that. In spite of its durability, reliability and accuracy the Remington 700 did have its short comings though. The .308 Nato Caliber Round had poor ballistics and tended to "drop like a rock" past 600 yards which made longer kills more difficult. Bolt action versus semi-automatic made multiple kill opportunities rare at best. My dream weapon would have been the M-1 Garand because of the .30-6 caliber and semi-automatic action.
Hill 65 was probably my favorite base-camp to be at. It controlled all the artillary and air-strikes for the entire An Hoa Valley. You had a panoramic view of the valley and surrounding mountain ranges. It provided some excellent Sniping opportunities but best of all........ were the air-strikes! Often times the F-4 Phantoms, after finishing their air-strikes, would buz the hill. They came in low, did a tail stand with full afterburners right over the hill. What an awesome thing to watch!! Getting a ride in the back seat of an F-4 became everyone's fantasy!
