Memorable Moments

Book One: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone

p. 136
"His eyes were black like Hagrid's, but they had none of Hagrid's warmth. They were cold and empty and made you think of dark tunnels...........He spoke in barely more than a whisper, but they caught every word---like Professor McGonagall, Snape had the gift of keeping a class silent without effort."

p. 137
"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion making. As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses... I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death -- if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach."

p. 181
"Unfortunately, something about their guilty faces caught Snape's eye. He limped over. He hadn't seen the fire, but he seemed to be looking for a reason to tell them off anyway. 'What's that you've got there, Potter?' It was Quidditch Through the Ages....'Library books are not to be taken outside the school...give it to me. Five points from Gryffindor.' 'He's just made that up,' Harry muttered angrily as Snape limped away. 'Wonder what's wrong with his leg?' 'Dunno, but I hope it's really hurting him,' said Ron bitterly.

p. 182
"Snape and Filch were inside, alone. Snape was holding his robes above his knees. One of his legs was bloody and mangled. Filch was handing Snape bandages. 'Blasted thing,' Snape was saying, 'How are you supposed to keep your eyes on all three heads at once?' Harry tried to shut the door quietly, but---'POTTER!' Snape's face was twisted with fury as he dropped his robes quickly to hide his leg. Harry gulped. 'I just wondered if I could have my book back.' 'GET OUT! OUT!'"

p. 191
"Reaching Snape she crouched down, pulled out her wand, and whispered a few, well-chosen words. Bright blue flames shot from her wand onto the hem of Snape's robes. It took perhaps thirty seconds for Snape to realize that he was on fire. A sudden yelp told her she had done her job. Scooping the fire off him into a little jar in her pocket, she scrambled back along the row."

Book 2: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

p. 77
"'Hang on...' Harry muttered to Ron. 'There's an empty chair at the staff table...where's Snape?' Professor Severus Snape was Harry's least favorite teacher. Harry also happened to be Snape's least favorite student. Cruel, sarcastic, and disliked by everybody except the students from his own house (Slytherin), Snape taught Potions. 'Maybe he's ill!' said Ron hopefully. 'Maybe he's left,' said Harry, 'because he missed out on the Defense Against the Dark Arts job again!' 'Or he might have been sacked!' said Ron enthusiastically. 'I mean, everyone hates him---' 'Or maybe,' said a very cold voice right behind them, 'he's waiting to hear why you two didn't arrive on the school train.' Harry spun around. There, his black robes rippling in a cold breeze, stood Severus Snape."

p. 190
Both of them swung their wands above their heads and pointed them at their opponent; Snape cried: "Expelliarmus!" There was a dazzling flash of scarlet light and Lockhart was blasted off his feet: He flew backward off the stage, smashed into the wall, and slid down it to sprawl on the floor."

p. 236
"'My friendly, card-carrying cupids!' beamed Lockhart. 'They will be roving around the school today delivering your valentines! And the fun doesn't stop here! I'm sure my colleagues will want to enter into the spirit of the occasion! Why not ask Professor Snape to show you how to whip up a Love Potion! And while you're at it, Professor Flitwick knows more about Entrancing Enchantments than any wizard I've ever met, the sly old dog!' Professor Flitwick buried his face in his hands. Snape was looking as though the first person to ask him for a Love Potion would be force-fed poison."

Book Three: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

p. 137
"The wardrobe burst open. Hook-nosed and menacing, Professor Snape stepped out, his eyes flashing at Neville. Neville backed away, his wand up, mouthing wordlessly....'R-r-riddikulus!' squeaked Neville. There was a noise like a whip crack. Snape stumbled; he was wearing a long, lace-trimmed dress and a towering hat topped with a moth-eaten vulture, and he was swinging a huge crimson handbag. "

p. 227
"'Crackers!' said Dumbledore enthusiastically, offering the end of a large silver noisemaker to Snape, who took it reluctantly and tugged. With a bang like a gunshot, the cracker flew apart to reveal a large, pointed witch's hat topped with a stuffed vulture. Harry, remembering the boggart, caught Ron's eye and they both grinned; Snape's mouth thinned and he pushed the hat toward Dumbledore, who swapped it for his wizard's hat at once."

pp. 286-287
"As though an invisible hand were writing upon it, words appeared on the smooth surface of the map. 'Mr. Moony presents his compliments to Professor Snape, and begs him to keep his abnormally large nose out of other people's business.' Snape froze. Harry stared, dumbstruck, at the message. But the map didn't stop there. More writing was appearing beneath the first. 'Mr. Prongs agrees with Mr. Moony, and would like to add that Professor Snape is an ugly git.' It would have been very funny if the situation hadn't been so serious. And there was more...'Mr. Padfoot would like to register his astonishment that an idiot like that ever became a professor.' Harry closed his eyes in horror. When he'd opened them, the map had had its last word. 'Mr. Wormtail bids Professor Snape good day, and advises him to wash his hair, the slimeball.'"

Book Four: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

p. 299
"'And what is all this noise about?' said a soft, deadly voice. Snape had arrived. The Slytherins clamored to give their explanations; Snape pointed a long yellow finger at Malfoy and said, 'Explain.' 'Potter attacked me, sir---' 'We attacked each other at the same time!' Harry shouted. '---and he hit Goyle---look---' Snape examined Goyle, whose face now resembled something that would have been at home in a book on poisonous fungi. 'Hospital wing, Goyle,' Snape said calmly. 'Malfoy got Hermione!' Ron said. 'Look!' He forced Hermione to show Snape her teeth---she was doing her best to hide them with her hands, though this was difficult as they had now grown past her collar. Pansy Parkinson and the other Slytherin girls were doubled up with silent giggles, pointing at Hermione from behind Snape's back. Snape looked coldly at Hermione, then said, "I see no difference." Hermione let out a whimper; her eyes filled with tears, she turned on her heel and ran, ran all the way up the corridor and out of sight. It was lucky, perhaps, that both Harry and Ron started shouting at Snape at the same time; lucky their voices echoed so much in the stone corridor, for in the confused din, it was impossible for him to hear exactly what they were calling him. He got the gist, however. "Let's see," he said, in his silkiest voice. "Fifty points from Gryffindor, and a detention each for Potter & Weasley. Now get inside, or it'll be a week's worth of detentions."

p. 426
"Snape and Karkaroff came around the corner. Snape had his wand out and was blasting rosebushes apart, his expression most ill-natured. Squeals issued from many of the bushes, and dark shapes emerged from them. 'Ten points from Ravenclaw, Fawcett!' Snape snarled as a girl ran past him. 'And ten points from Hufflepuff, too, Stebbins!' as a boy went rushing after her. 'And what are you two doing?' he added, catching sight of Harry and Ron on the path ahead. Karkaroff, Harry saw, looked slightly discomposed to see them standing there. His hand went nervously to his goatee, and he began winding it around his finger. 'We're walking,' Ron told Snape shortly. 'Not against the law, is it? 'Keep walking, then!' Snape snarled, and he brushed past them, his long black cloak billowing out behind him. Karkaroff hurried away after Snape. Harry and Ron continued down the path."
