The Need to Identify the Mariqun of Today
“When I took up the reins of government one party broke their allegiance (nakathah), another missed the truth of the religion (maraqah), and another deviated (qasatah).” - Imam ‘Ali (‘a)
Abu Mus’ab al-Zarqani’s April 2004 audio message “to the Islamic nation” <tides.carebridge.org/Translations/Zarqawi.htm>
is yet another of the most recent explicit warnings and reminders on the
urgent need for all the Muntazirin to identify the modern-day
Mariqun.
This message of ‘Usama bin Ladin’s trusted lieutenant brings to light the
following noteworthy points:
- Repetition of the centuries-old venomous calumnies that the Shi‘ah are
infidels and atheists for “hating the Prophet and his friends,” as well as
collaborators at the hands of the enemies of Islam such as “America and the
Zionists”.
- Open call “to the Islamic nation” to kill the Shi‘ah along with the
Americans and collaborators: “Kill the Americans and the Shi‘ah and the
collaborators.”
- Tacit complicity, or at least consent, in the killing of Ayatullah
Muhammad Baqir Hakim and many others: “God bless us with his (Hakim’s) death
because he was an enemy of Islam.”
From the above points, we can realize how true were the statements of
Ayatullah Mutahhari when he says: “Although they (the Khawarij) have
been overthrown and are no more... their thinking has taken root among the
Muslims, and consequently their spirit has always existed, and still does,
in the shape of sanctimonious persons, all the way down these fourteen
centuries… and they can be counted as a grave hindrance to the advancement
of Islam and the Muslims.”
These incarnations of the Khawarij are also, in the words of Imam
‘Ali (‘a), “fly aimlessly from the religion of Allah as an arrow shot
aimlessly from a bow” for having a spirit of inadmissible fanaticism,
sanctimoniousness and dangerous ignorance.
Nevertheless, the mere existence of the Mariqun and their menacing
threat should not give us a carte blanche to ally with the Qasitun or
Nakithun. The fact should not be overlooked that the hands of the
modern-day Qasitun are not less innocent than that of the Mariqun
as far as shedding the blood of Muslims, Shi‘ah in particular, is concerned.
This is presently true on a day-to-day basis at Palestine, Iraq and
Afghanistan as elsewhere.
This the way of ‘Ali (‘a), the principle of Red Shi‘ism, the tenet of the
pure Muhammadan Islam, and the policy of Imam al-Mahdi al-Muntazar (may
Allah hasten his glorious advent).
