After we purchased the home we decided we wanted a secure place for the dogs and a place to relax with lots of color. We decided to take the north yard along the side of the house and fence it off to make this area. Follow along and we will briefly show you what we did. We still have a few things to do in this area, but it is basically complete (Now all we have to do is wait for the place to'grow up'!)
This is what we started with! We have stairs, a broken water heater door and WEEDS! |
First we cleared the weeds and fenced off an area for the dogs. Then we built a temporary porch and started building the wooden fence. |

We have finished the front and back fences/gates, (we still need to finish the side fence!) replaced the water heater door...
...and set up the BBQ and patio table. We have removed the temporary wire fence so the puppies have access to the whole area.

Next we build a brick area for the BBQ grille. The same brick will be used under the patio table.
Purchased 27 plants and laid out a proposed walkway. The two chairs will be a privacy area when the plants grow up.
Let the digging begin!

The plants are in the ground...
...the privacy area will have artificial grass...
...and the walkway is done!
We still have to install the bricks under the patio table, the fake grass in the privacy area and complete the side fencing. We have three vines planted along the fence. When they mature they should cover the side fence completely. We will also be adding a contrasting color of the same material used for the walkway to cover the sand. The dogs like this and it will keep the dust down. This will be one of the last things we do. We actually hired a landscaper to provide plants for us. It didn't cost us anymore to do this than if we went to the nursery and bought the plants ourselves, and we didn't have to haul them. We told the landscaper we wanted year round color and some shade trees. What we wound up with is quite a mix. The plants include and Ebbing Silverberry bush, Rosemary, Lilacs, Indian Hawthorne, Mums, Day Lillies, Lavender, Cotton Easter, Pansies, a Cottonwood Tree, a Crepe Myrtle tree/bush, a White Lace vine, dwarf Plumbago, a red Trumpet vine, Barberry bushes, a purple Plum tree, a Sand Cherry bush, a Vitex (chaste) tree/bush, some Turpentine bushes, and a Globe willow tree just behind the back fence. It's all on a drip system and when they all grow up the landscaper says it will be like a mini botanical garden!
