B.O.M. Volunteer Fire Department is part of a combination Fire District. Which is
operated by the Iberia Parish
Fire Protection District #1.
Iberia Parish Fire Protection District #1 protects the live and property of
approximately 35,000 people in the areas of Iberia Parish that are outside
the city limits of New Iberia, Delcambre, Jeanerette, and Loreauville. This
response area includes about 390 square miles. The Fire District also
responds automatically to incidents in the municipalities of Delcambre,
Jeanerette, and Loreauville to assist those departments. Additionally, the
Fire District is responsible for providing fire protection and rescue
services to the Port of Iberia, as well as assisting in Aircraft Rescue Firefighting
services to the Acadiana Regional Airport in accordance with FAA
Regulations. The Fire District is comprised of career personnel and
volunteer firefighters. The Fire District is also comprised of five
battalions: Beliare-Olivier-Morbihan, Coteau, Grand Marias, Lydia,
and Rynella. All personnel are trained to provide effective and
efficient fire protection and emergency services.
During 1997, B.O.M. responded to a total of 200 calls Parish wide,
including 38 structure fires and 32 rescue calls. 59 of the 200 calls were
in the B.O.M. area, fortunately only 5 of those were classed as structure
fires.
B.O.M. members spent 1624 hours training in 1997. These hours include
classroom and "hands-on" evolutions. Several Members attained
certification from the National Fire Protection Association.
B.O.M. is also active with the Boy Scouts of America. A Fire Explorer
Post has been formed for ages 14-18. These young people are very active
with the program and are allowed to participate in many of the firefighting
activities.
Our Proudest achievement came in February 1998. That achievement was the
reduction of your "Homeowners Insurance Fire Class Rating". This
was achieved by many man-hours and several years of hard work upgrading,
improving, and training for a better prepared fire service.
What does this reduction in fire class rating mean to you? It means a lower
annual premium on your homeowner's policy. We dropped from a Class 6
to a Class 5. Some carriers have reduced some policies by 12%.
