Smitty's Shih Tzu Rescue
Smitty's Shih Tzu Rescue is a group of dog-minded individuals.. We help one dog at a time. It is in honour of Smitty, a one year old abused Shih Tzu, that we named the rescue. Smitty is now a friendly, outgoing six year old who loves to do agility with his mom. Our goal is to turn unwanted, abused or neglected Shih Tzu and other small breeds, into wanted, loved companion dogs.
What Do We Do?
We rescue shelter dogs, with a priority placed on small breeds (Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Pomeranian, etc.). We only accept owner-surrenders that are accompanied by a surrender fee to cover vet costs and care associated with the dog. If we have room, we will help other purebreds and mixed-breed dogs. Our requirement is that all dogs are of sound temperament. Once the dog is in the care of Smitty's Shih Tzu Rescue, we put alot of energy into each dog. All rescues are provided necessary vet care (altering, vaccinations, heartworm testing and prevention in season, etc.). While in foster care, all dogs are housebroken, taught house manners, socialized, introduced to riding in a vehicle and given some basic obedience training prior to placement.
Length of time in Foster Care
How long a dog is required to stay in foster care depends on the dog's needs. All of our rescues are in foster care for at least two weeks prior to placement. It is in these two weeks that a decision is made as to what type of home the dog needs.
Rescue's Commitment
We are committed to each of SSTR's dogs for the rest of it's natural life. We will take a dog back at any time for any reason. We DO NOT want our dogs left at a shelter. We are also committed to reducing pet overpopulation. For this reason, all rescues are altered prior to placement. Should a puppy be rescued, it shall not be placed until it is old enough to be safely altered.
Commitment Required
We require that our adoptive homes have a fenced yard or exercise area. We will not place dogs in situations like those that they came from. For this reason we do not place outside dogs. Dogs need to be with people who can spend time with them and provide a stimulating, loving environment.
