Other stuff

Why is this page called by the vague name "other stuff" ? Well, that's because as time goes on, its contents will change according to the mood of the day. For instance, today it is beginning with some worthwhile people. On another day it might begin with something different. And it might change after only one day or it might be unchanged for many days. Partly that will depend upon you, my dear visitor. Although I do tend to be a bit busy, I like getting email. So by all means, send me mail and tell me what you think of my pages; and you may make suggestions or requests about the content, especially of this page.

Let's have a look at some worthwhile people. If you don't know them, do yourself a favor and get to know them. Any good search engine (AltaVista is good) will find them.
First, let's go back a couple thousand years to about 60 B.C. Here is a picture of a statue in northern France. His name is Vercingetorix, and they tell an amusing story about the statue. When it was first erected, some local people asked who it was, and when they heard the answer, for some reason they thought they heard "ver St. Getorix" (behold St. Getorix) - think of the way Brits and northern French pronounce a name like St. John - they say "sinjun" - so later, some women were going up the hill and someone asked them where they were going, and they said they were going to pray to "St. Getorix". Well, you might have seen a movie "Druids" in English, or "Vercingetorix" in French. If not, and if you liked "Braveheart", look for "Druids". It is about a huge battle waged by the united tribes of "Gauls" of northern France against the army of Julius Caesar. (The good guys lost, militarily, but achieved the moral high ground and Vercingetorix is revered to this day as being a sort of French Che Guevara, standing for what is right and for justice even against impossible odds.)
Coming forward in time to the 1800s, here is Karl Marx. If all you know about him has come from rightist propaganda, the most probable case, do yourself a favor and do some reading about this great man.
Phil Ochs tried to stop the Vietnam War.
Here are a couple of N'Awlins jazz singers, Doctor John on the left, and Randy Newman on the right.

Which brings us up to the present, and a singer who deserves more attention than he seems to be getting, Coti Sorokin.

Don't try to click on that URL above for Coti's song. Click here and you will be taken to cd universe's page about the album "Canciones Para Llevar", where you can hear samples of all the songe, including "Nada Fue Un Error".

As said, if you aren't familiar with any of these people, do yourself a favor and read up on them. It won't take long, and you will be glad you did. It is always worthwhile to get acquainted with one of humanity's good ones, given that we hear so much every day about the swine...

The most beautiful city in Europe, according to some people, is Budapest.

Here's where you get the good language dictionary: Freelang. Pick any given language but don't download it yet. First, download the program. Don't try to run it yet. Go back and download the list for the language you picked (or any of them, actually). From then on, just go to whatever language you want and download the word list. You only download the program once. Now run the program and if you click on "Language" you can choose from among the languages you downloaded. From English to that language, or from that language to English. I have about twenty of them. (I try to read about a dozen languages, with varying degrees of success from nearly all in English, German, Spanish, to very little in the case of something like Romanian.) If you want all those languages to be translated back and forth to and from Spanish, go to Spanish Freelang and do essentially the same thing. Your basic program, in that case, will be centered on Spanish.

And speaking of Spanish, let's learn some more Spanish. You cannot have too much Spanish. You cannot have too many languages. Click here.

I am on Yahoo Messenger, my handle is smithroney and you can click on my name and then in the Contacts menu read my profile. Message me or send me email at [email protected]; or if you use a mail program, click here.
